Starting in 2007 as the world’s first cello blues band when Ilene McHolland (cello, guitar, ukelele, keys) met bassist Bas Vossen in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. They toured Europe and the West Coast with many different musicians they meet at jam sessions. Mostly blues, rock, jazz, funk with some added spices. Audiences love Ilene and her electric 6 string cello, backed up by a swinging, powerful rhythm section that makes you want to get up and dance and enjoy a magic time.
A big NO GO with gig heaven is their combination of almost no communication with performers, so that they only found out about the request AFTER the fact (on the day of, is about the same; musicians are normal people with full agendas!). Being a manager with long term experience, I realize this only costs time without giving anything back, so here I will add my personal information to reach me dial five three zero, six 3 one, five three seven five (text only!).

Bas Vossen

Solo cello needs (pref set up for acoustic, like fishman) amp, or plugin for amp, a chair, floor protection for cello end pin, something to keep end pin from moving (rope or hole in which endpin fits). Duo needs aforementioned amp plus bass amp or plugins for both. Bass player needs extra mic. In case drummer also is hired: enough space to have the drumkit, amps and players without them being cramped which would influence performance. Parking space to load in and out would be preferred close to the stage.
Venue needs to do the promotion. Band gets paid in full, even if there is no audience showing up. The responsibility to make it profitable is entirely upon the organiser, not the band, the band is responsible for performing, and making audience happy.
There is a JBL stereo system with mixer, enough for smaller venues. No light show (most venues have their own).
We always provide music before and after our concerts. In case the event organizer wants to have the party continu long after the band stopped, they will have to organize their own sound system for this goal.
The sixties are over, unfortunately.
Difficult question! Some gigs are better because they pay so good, others because we're surrounded with friends, and others because we're playing with the greatest musicians we've worked with, and so on. We loved playing on the Spanish beaches, on American festivals, but also playing at parties at the Hof in the Netherlands.

Our band came together right after Ilene and I met during a concert from a famous American guitarist in Amsterdam. We talked about our instruments and our passion for the Blues. The bassist (me) invited Ilene to live with him and since both preferred Spain over the Netherlands, a cheap camper was bought and that was the beginning of a world tour that never ended -just got paused during Covid.
Again, a very hard question to answer truthfully. As the bassist is a life long Jimi Hendrix fan, this is his biggest influence, after which come Zappa, Santana, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Led Zeppelin, Thin Lizzy, Rush and early Iron Maiden. The cellist loves classical music as much as jazz, blues or rock. She also loves ukelele.
Arriving in time always is our goal so we can be relaxed, having plenty of time to set up, sound check and for example eat a bit. Performances typically vary from two 45m sets to two 60m sets. In case the audience hijacks the band for extra songs, we're happy with that, as it shows the lifeline between artists and fans.
Depending on the temperature, we can play outside.. but not with frozen fingers, or sweat dripping down our faces all of the time. Since we're an electric band, we need power.
At the end of our set we ask our audiences if they like to hear us play a favorite. Ilene has a huge repertoire.
they started throwing bottles out of pure love and enthusiasm!! But seriously they all say we're much more a live band than a studio vehicle. We love to make people happy and have our calibration instruments ready to measure the specifications under which this can take place. The bass player loves to make people dance. The cellist/singer makes everybody listen. Combined with a good drummer, there is no way you can stay in your chair during a Freewheelers Cello Band event!
