Photographic and film makeup is built for the lens rather than the room, so it reads heavier in person and is designed to hold under continuous lighting. Period and special effects work adds prosthetics, ageing and injury effects, which take considerably longer to apply and to remove. Artists in this area usually quote by the day and expect a call time well before the shoot. Event photographers and wedding photographers can often recommend artists they have worked with.

Rates run from $70 to $260+ depending on the work, with the average booking at $170. Bridal packages are usually quoted per face with the trial priced separately, while editorial and film work is charged by the day or half-day. Early starts, travel and large parties needing more than one artist all push the figure up.
