About / Biography

Daeyong Lim (임 대용) is a Korean-Canadian vocalist, bandleader and arranger based in Toronto. His baritone voice explores a wide range of dynamics and emotions through songs. He draws inspirations from the joyful musicality of Louis Armstrong to the big-band swing of Count Basie to the soul of Marvin Gaye and the powerful spirit of Korean Folk Singing. You will find him performing in local venues such as The Rex, Drom Taberna and The Emmet Ray.

He studied music at Humber Polytechnic in Toronto where he was able to expose himself to a wide range of music such as jazz, latin, gospel and funk, studying with local figures such as Jocelyn Gould, Ben Bishop, Alex Dean, Christine Duncan, Natalie Stewart, Shelly Burger and Hilario Duran. Soon after, he found himself at Tribeca Jazz Institute in New York where he was closely coached by the jazz giants such as Marion Cowings, Benny Benack III, Chris Byars, Ari Roland, Michael Kanaan, Greg Ruggiero and Lucy Yeghiazharyan.

Daeyong was born and raised in Seoul during the mp3 era and grew up in Toronto. Outside of music, he’s a middle child, a poet, a certified arborist, a cook and a dog dad. You might find him roaming around on his vintage bicycle or marching on the street with a Brazilian drum group or slacklining in the parks.

Technical Info

What are your basic technical requirements?

A Duo band can fit in a space of 3 x 6' but anything larger than a 4-piece (quartet) will require minimum of 8 x 12' space. We require 2 power sockets and parking spaces.

What information do you require about a venue?

We need to know any directions that will help us find the venue and find the right place to load in our equipment. We’d also need to be informed about the available sound set up on site (if any) and soundcheck time (for our arrival).

Do you provide sound and lighting equipment?

Yes, We bring our own mics, Speakers and Amps

Can you provide a Spotify/DJ service before and between your sets?

We'd be happy to put on music between sets for you. You can advise us which album/ playlists/ songs to play or we can choose music appropriate for the occasion.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best gig you've ever done and the best venue you've ever worked at?

We performed at the Kensington Market Jazz Festival and venues such as the Rex and Drom Taberna.

What's your favourite type of event?

We enjoy every experience as each occasions are special in their own ways.

Because we have much experience in busking, we enjoy street performances as well.

Performance Info

What are your typical setup and performance times?

We normally arrive an hour before the performance to set up. We normally perform 2 x 45 minutes or 2 x 60 minute sets. We’re happy to play a bit longer or shorter but we’ve found that these set times suit us and our audiences best.

Are you happy to perform outside?

Of course, we’re happy to play outside but we ask for shade, a flat level surface and a power supply close to the performance area.

Do the clients have a say in what you play or is it a set repertoire list only?

We can learn specific songs before the event but we usually limit this to 5 songs (unless they're one of the jazz standards). The clients are welcome to pick a set list from our repertoire or let us choose the music for them. Let us know what you're looking for!

How do previous clients most commonly describe your performances?

Upbeat jazz band that is strangely nostalgic yet fresh!
