Styles of Magic Act

Each of the specialisms below has its own page, and plenty of performers work across more than one of them. Strolling magicians suit cocktail hours and networking, greeting guests in small groups with short visual routines that break the ice. Comedy magicians lean on humour as much as method and work well after dinner, when the room is seated and receptive. Illusionists build larger set pieces around staging and reveals, which needs a proper performance area. Mind readers and mentalists take a psychological approach that tends to land well with corporate audiences. For younger guests, children's magicians pace a show around attention spans and build in participation.

How to Judge an Act Before Booking

Close-up magic is difficult to film well, so a showreel tells you less here than it would for a band. Watch the reactions rather than the tricks: whether guests are leaning in, whether the performer is talking to the group or performing at it, and whether the footage comes from real bookings or a studio. Read reviews for the room type rather than the score, since an act that is excellent at a seated dinner is not automatically right for a noisy standing reception. Performers with a specific niche will usually say so on their profile.

What It Costs to Hire a Magician

Most acts quote for a performance window rather than an hourly rate, and the average booking lands around $350. What moves a quote is the length of the appearance, whether the act is roaming or staged, travel distance, and the day of the week. A close-up set of 60 to 90 minutes is the standard unit and sits at the lower end. Full stage shows of 30 to 45 minutes cost more because of the props, setup and rehearsal behind them, and combined bookings covering a reception and an after-dinner slot are usually priced as a package rather than as two separate fees.
