About / Biography

Charles' energetic, funky style with the help of his trusty loop pedal, will have you uncontrollably tapping your feet, clapping your hands and dancing like you wouldn't believe was possible to a solo acoustic artist!

Creating a live soundtrack in front of your very eyes, to songs you know and love, but have slipped into the recesses of your memory... Aiming to create both a visual and auditory experience that captures hearts and minds. With a huge range of songs and genres that Charles can call upon, you can expect to hear Pop, Rock, indie, Soul, RnB, Hip-Hop, Garage, House, Reggae and Country on this musical journey through time

Charles is available for bars, functions and weddings and most regularly plays in Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Hampshire & Oxfordshire. He is willing to travel further afield for a relevant fuel surcharge.

He also plays in a duo or a 4 piece function band if the occasion requires something more to get the party started!

Souljer have been playing together as a duo for several years now and have performed at weddings and functions a plenty. You can expect soul/funk/pop and country to name but a few genres these guys will throw at you.

The 4-piece function band (Relativity) is a new venture that came together in 2020 with 2 of Charles' cousins Emma Ryan and Jamie Ryan and his co-musician from the Souljer duo Mark Leppard. Relativity focuses on getting people dancing to the classic songs from the 80's, 90's and up to modern day. Pop, R&B, Hip-Hop, Garage, House, Drum & Bass and Reggae can be expected from this group who are a breath of fresh air from the norm. The 4 vocalists/musicians, with harmonies galore and clever reworkings of classic dance tunes take the performance to a new level of aural perfection.

Technical Info

What are your basic technical requirements?

For solo, I need a minimum of 3 x 3 metres performance space, with access to a power socket within 10 metres (20 max) and 1 parking space
For duo, we need a minimum of 6 metres wide x 3 metres deep, with access to a power socket within 10 metres (20 max) and 2 parking spaces
for 4-piece, we need a minimum of 6 metres wide x 4 metres deep, with access to 2 x separate power sockets within 10 metres (20 max) and 3 to 4 parking spaces

What information do you require about a venue?

We need to know any special directions that won't come up on a normal Google Maps search with the postcode/venue name, information on where we can park to allow easy load-in/out of equipment, whether the venue requires PLI and PAT testing certificates and whether there is a sound limiter of any kind to be aware of

Do you provide sound and lighting equipment?

Yes, we are completely self-contained. We bring our own PA system to all of our gigs and on request we can bring simple lights in addition.

Can you provide a Spotify/DJ service before and between your sets?

Yes, we are happy to play music from spotify, or directly from a device in between our sets. We can choose the music ourselves, or the client can also choose to provide a device with a pre-chosen playlist of their choosing, which we can run through our system

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best gig you've ever done and the best venue you've ever worked at?

I was the opening act for the Commissioning Ball at the Sandhurst Military Academy. It was amazing to see so many well dressed young officers and their partners, as they celebrated passing their Officers exams. There were apparently over 5000 people at the event and it was the biggest and most extravagant event I've ever been lucky enought to have been a part of

What's your favourite type of event?

I love playing at weddings or private birthday parties, as everyone is always very happy and willing to pass the positive energy to you as a performer, so that you really feel like there is an "exchange of energy" between you - As a musician/singer, there is nothing better

What's your previous experience and how did you start gigging?

I started gigging in bands when I was a teenager, but becoming a professional happened entirely by chance! I was on a night out for my sister's 30th birthday in London and we were in a bar where a singer/guitarist was playing. He wasn't feeling very well (had the flu), so was about to pack up and go home, when I asked him if he minded if I could play a set? He was delighted to let me, as it was doing him a favour. Long story short, I ended up playing for over an hour, with my sister and friends all loving the experience... The Bar manager came up to me afterwards and offered me a residency on a Friday night in Clapham and the rest as they say... is history!

Which artists have you been most influenced by, who is your favourite artist and what is the greatest song of all time?

I like a lot of people have been hugely influenced by Michael Jackson growing up as a kid, but then I've also been hugely influenced by my parents favourite music; My mum was very into soul music, with Stevie Wonder, Lionel Ritchie and more shaping my style. Then my dad was more into his rock music, with Queen, the Rolling Stones, ELO and more being his preference. I probably lean more towards the Soul/pop/country vibe these days in terms of my playing style, but I love listening to all music. I'm not sure I have a favourite song of all time - It's frequently changing, as is the artists/bands that I like the most in any given moment/era

Performance Info

What are your typical setup and performance times?

We normally arrive around an hour before the performance to setup/sound-check. The usual performance time is 2 x 45 minute sets over 2 hours, but we can play up to 3 x 45 minutes if the client requests it

Are you happy to perform outside?

We're happy to play outside, but we ask for cover from the elements, a flat, level surface and access to power sockets within 10-20 metres max

Do the clients have a say in what you play or is it a set repertoire list only?

We can learn specific songs before the event, providing we are given enough time and the song is "within our act vibe" - If you like what we do and you have come this far, you won't be wanting to ask for genres that are outside of what we play/do anyway (at least that's the hope!). Clients are welcome to assist us in picking a set list, or we are just as happy to get a general vibe for the sort of things you would like and then we can formulate it ourselves from there.

How do previous clients most commonly describe your performances?

Previous customers would describe us as polite, professional, energetic performers that enhance the positive vibes of the event
