Technical Info

What are your basic technical requirements?

We need a performance space suited to the number of musicians (approximately one square meter for each) and an electrical outlet.

What information do you require about a venue?

We need to know any directions that will help us find the venue and find the right place to load in our equipment.

Do you provide sound and lighting equipment?

Yes, we’re completely self contained. We bring our own PA system to all of our gigs. We do not provide lighting systems.

Can you provide a Spotify/DJ service before and between your sets?

Yes, we’re happy to play music from Spotify before, after and between our sets. We’re happy to choose the music ourselves or let the client choose the music.

Can you travel anywhere in France?

Yes, we can travel anywhere in France.
Our work has taken us from Brittany to Provence. L’Épicerie du Jazz has also performed in Italy and Poland—anything is possible!

Should we arrange meals for you?

Yes, if the performance takes place around mealtime, we ask that you provide a meal for each musician.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best gig you've ever done and the best venue you've ever worked at?

In 2018 we won the Jazz à Vannes festival's talent competition and thanks to that we played on the main stage as the opening act for Kenny Garrett.

What's your favourite type of event?

We love playing at all sorts of events whether in the foreground or to accompany discussions with hushed jazz.

What's your previous experience and how did you start gigging?

It all began in 2013, when childhood friends Quentin and Hugo started out by performing jazz standards in bars. As other musicians gradually joined them, they decided to found *L'Épicerie du Jazz* in 2016—a collective designed to meet event requests centered on jazz, a genre defined by its remarkable versatility and openness.

Which artists have you been most influenced by, who is your favourite artist and what is the greatest song of all time?

The legendary stars (Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, Charlie Parker...) shaped our jazz education. But we also draw inspiration from icons of related genres : James Brown for funk, Nina Simone for soul, Elis Regina for bossa nova, Django Reinhardt for Gypsy jazz...

Performance Info

What are your typical setup and performance times?

Our arrival time will depend on the time required for setup. For a duo, we often need only 30 minutes, whereas an hour and a half will be required for a sextet. We can add one or two extra sets of 40 minutes, but there will be an additional charge.

Are you happy to perform outside?

We are happy to perform outdoors, but we require shade if it is too hot, shelter in case of rain, a level surface, and a power supply near the performance area.

Do the clients have a say in what you play or is it a set repertoire list only?

We can learn specific songs before the event but we usually limit this to 3 songs. The clients are welcome to pick a set list from our repertoire or let us choose the music for them.

How do previous clients most commonly describe your performances?

Previous customers highlight our professionalism, our musicality and our cordiality.

What type of events do you play for?

L'Épicerie du Jazz performs at all types of events (birthdays, wedding cocktail hours, seminars, corporate functions, neighborhood parties, dances, galas, etc.).
Whether you simply wish to enhance your event with elegant, warm background music that fosters conversation, enjoy the music you love—and share it with your guests—by experiencing a genuine concert, or set the dance floor on fire with live music, L'Épicerie du Jazz will always find the perfect recipe to make your event unique.

What should I choose for my event: jazz orchestra with or without vocals, with or without drums?

It all depends on the desired atmosphere. While an instrumental group offers a subtle, mellow soundscape, a band with vocals makes your event a bit more memorable and inviting—especially if the guests know the lyrics!
Drums provide a rhythmic structure that allows people to instantly recognize familiar songs, without necessarily increasing the volume significantly.
