I make grown-ups gasp for a living.
Ian Batterbury is a comedy mentalist with more than 40 years in the craft and over 7,000 performances behind him. His shows mix impossible magic, mind reading, and comedy in a way that gets a whole room laughing, gasping, and talking about it for days after.
His signature show, PHENOMENA, is a feel-good comedy mentalism experience built around a simple idea: finding joy and peace within the chaos. The show runs 30 to 60 minutes in its corporate form and can be customized to your event, your audience, and your theme.
For receptions, trade shows, and holiday parties, Ian also performs close-up and strolling magic, including his Vegas-style close-up table, a proven crowd magnet that pulls visitors to a booth and keeps them there. He also leads The Phenomenal Mindset Workshop, a session on creative thinking, perception, and problem solving drawn from four years teaching those skills at GE leadership seminars.
Ian has performed at Second City Toronto and Comedy Bar, appeared on Price Is Right Tonight, and is a Canadian Choice Award Winner in Entertainers, Brampton (2025). His corporate clients have included GE, Warner Brothers, IBM, RE/MAX, Hyundai, Coldwell Banker, Yokohama Tire, and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Canada.
Available for corporate events, private parties, weddings, trade shows, festivals, and holiday celebrations across Ontario and North America
A clear performance area and access to one standard power outlet nearby. I provide my own sound and show control. Close-up and strolling sets need no power or staging at all.
How to access the performance area for load-in, the room layout and where the audience will be seated, whether the room can be dimmed for the stage show, and the event timeline, including when guests arrive and when the performance starts
Yes for sound. I bring my own battery-powered portable PA speaker and wireless microphone, so I am self-contained for most rooms, and I can connect to the venue's house sound for larger spaces. Lighting is the venue's house lighting
For the stage show, a clear area of about 3 metres by 3 metres is ideal, with a clear view for the audience. Close-up and strolling sets need no dedicated space, as I move between tables and groups
Best gig: teaching problem analysis and creative thinking at GE's Rising Leaders seminars for four straight years, using magic to show leaders how to think outside the box. Best venue: Second City Toronto - had a monthly show on the John Candy Box Theatre stage for 14 months
A packed room for PHENOMENA, where the whole audience gasps at the same moment.
More than 40 years performing, with over 7,000 shows behind me, from close-up tables to full theatre audiences, corporate stages, festivals, and trade shows
Most magicians do tricks. I build an experience around connection: comedy, magic, and mind reading woven together and customized to your audience, with a show that leaves people feeling closer, not just fooled. Forty years and 7,000 shows in, the goal is still the same: a room full of grown-ups gasping and laughing together.
Yes. I perform family shows as Magic Ian, including libraries, school shows, and festivals, alongside my adult corporate and private event work
Popular dates, especially around the holidays, book up early, so it is best to get in touch as soon as you have a date in mind.
Close-up and strolling sets need little setup: I am ready within about 30 minutes of arriving, and typically run 1 to 2 hours. For the stage show, setup takes a little longer to get sound and props ready before doors. The corporate stage show runs 30 to 60 minutes; the full PHENOMENA experience runs 75 minutes, or 90 minutes with an intermission.
Yes. I perform outdoors at festivals, street events, and garden parties. I bring my own battery-powered sound, so I do not need mains power, though shade and a flat, sheltered spot help, especially on windy days
Incredible, engaging, and professional come up again and again. Clients tell me their guests talked about the show for days, and one bride told me it was the best part of her wedding day. Solid record on Google reviews of over 100 Five Star Reviews (never received anything less)
Yes. The show is built around your event, your audience, and your theme, from the routines chosen to the running time. Tell me about your guests and the feel you are after, and I will shape the show around that, including themed material where it fits.
Yes. My Vegas-style close-up table is built for exactly that. It pulls visitors to the booth and keeps them there, giving your team time to talk with them.
Yes. I also offer close-up and strolling magic for receptions, and The Phenomenal Mindset Workshop, a session on creative thinking, perception, and problem solving.
