About / Biography

Liyasakha Tyhoba is a dynamic South African singer, pianist, and guitarist whose sound moves seamlessly through Neo-Soul, Pop, Afro-Soul, and Jazz. With a rich and emotive performance style, Liyasakha delivers timeless classics and genre-defying interpretations of songs like "Crazy" (Gnarls Barkley), "Cherish the Day" (Robert Glasper ft. Lalah Hathaway), "Yakhal'inkomo" (Winston Mankunku), and "Ndikhethe Wena" (Ami Faku). His diverse repertoire and soulful presence make him a captivating live performer, whether on intimate stages or large-scale events.
He has graced some of South Africa’s biggest stages, including the National Arts Festival, Fête De La Musique, The Cape Town Fringe, Umhlathuze Jazz Festival, and the prestigious Durban July. Along the way, he has shared the stage with celebrated artists such as The Muffinz, Slum Village, Samthing Soweto, Chris Walker, Aewon Wolf, Tubatsi Moloi, Muneyi, Bokang Ramatlapeng, the late Yallunder, and many more — reflecting his versatility and growing influence in the live music scene.
As a songwriter, Liyasakha also made his mark with “Umvulo” by DJ Mdix ft. Zanda — a chart-topping hit that earned a Metro FM Award nomination. Whether performing solo or alongside a full band, Liyasakha brings a unique blend of musicality, soul, and storytelling that resonates deeply with audiences.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best gig you've ever done and the best venue you've ever worked at?

It has to be The National Arts Festival in 2018 at Graham Hotel, the audience was fully engaged so much that, when loadshedding and the lights went out, I finished the rest of the show full on acoustic in the dark, the audience had their flashlights on and they were singing along

What's your favourite type of event?

I love playing all sorts of events, except for funerals, but I do love corporate gigs, they're very straightforward

What's your previous experience and how did you start gigging?

I started my first band in varsity, we played at a talent show and never looked back, this was 10+ years ago, over the years I learned more instruments, after varsity I just started playing more events, from parties, weddings, festivals and I started doing more studio work as well

Which artists have you been most influenced by, who is your favourite artist and what is the greatest song of all time?

If I'm being honest:Robert Glasper, in terms of piano playing, I love his modern approach and subtlety, then as a singer it's artists like The Muffinz, Thandiswa Mazwai, Lalah Hathaway, Bilal, I love soulful and dynamic singing. My greatest song of all time is easily "As" by Stevie Wonder

Performance Info

What are your typical setup and performance times?

We normally arrive a couple of hours to set up and especially soundcheck, so tat things are running smoothly and the sound engineers know our needs by the time we get to play

Are you happy to perform outside?

We’re happy to play outside but we ask for shade, a flat level surface and a power supply close to the performance area.

Do the clients have a say in what you play or is it a set repertoire list only?

We have a set repertoire but it's totally adjustable, we can do the songs requested by the clients

How do previous clients most commonly describe your performances?

"Smooth" has come up more often than any other descriptive word or term
