Luis Nubiola’s remarkable creative vitality results in unique masterpieces of Jazz and Latin Jazz. His music can be described as contemporary while embodying the freedom, creativity, and vibrant energy that define the essence of Latin Jazz. Luis Nubiola’s compositions are distinguished by their unique phrasing—highly original and rarely encountered on the European jazz scene. For more than a decade, he has lived and worked in Europe, collaborating with renowned European musicians while remaining deeply connected to his Cuban roots. **Luis Nubiola – Saxophone** Luis Nubiola is internationally recognized for his appearance in *Cold War*, the acclaimed film directed by Paweł Pawlikowski, which won the Best Director Award at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival and received three Academy Award nominations in 2019. Born in Cuba, Nubiola graduated from the Amadeo Roldán National Conservatory of Music as both a professional saxophonist and certified saxophone instructor. For several years, he performed regularly at *La Zorra y El Cuervo*, Cuba’s legendary jazz club. During this period, he was invited to collaborate with many of Cuba’s most distinguished jazz musicians, including José Miguel Crego (El Greco), Diákara, Paquito D’Rivera, George Benson, Ralph Irizarry, and Steve Coleman. While touring in 2001 with *Top Secret*, the ensemble led by the celebrated Cuban trumpeter José Miguel Crego (El Greco), Nubiola decided to settle in Costa Rica. There, he quickly established himself as one of the country’s leading and most recognizable jazz musicians. Throughout his career in Costa Rica, he collaborated with outstanding artists such as Grammy Award winner Walter Flores and Chocolate Band. In December 2005, he released his debut album, **Nubiola**. Three years later, in December 2008, he produced **Live at Jazz Café**, the first jazz DVD ever recorded in Costa Rica. The live DVD version of *Nubiola* earned him the prestigious **Composer of the Year in the Jazz Genre** award. His subsequent album, **914**, received the **Best Album of 2009** award and was released as both a CD and DVD. In Poland, Luis has shared the stage with some of the country's most distinguished jazz musicians, including Włodek Pawlik, Zbigniew Namysłowski, Andrzej Jagodziński, Joachim Mencel, and many others. Since moving to Europe, he has recorded numerous albums with acclaimed jazz artists. Every performance has its own magic, but some of the most memorable experiences of my career have been performing at prestigious venues and international jazz events, where music creates a unique connection between cultures and audiences.
Among the highlights of my career are performances at Blue Note Poznań, Jazz Café Costa Rica, the S1 Studio of Polish Radio, and the renowned Jazz Jamboree Festival in Poland. I have also had the privilege of sharing the stage with outstanding musicians from Poland, Cuba, and other countries.
Each event has been a different and inspiring experience, but the most rewarding moments are always those when the music creates an unforgettable atmosphere and becomes an essential part of a special occasion.
My favourite type of event is a sophisticated cocktail reception, corporate gala, or cultural event where the music can create an elegant and memorable atmosphere.
I especially enjoy performances where I can interact with the audience and adapt my repertoire to the energy of the room — from smooth jazz and Latin jazz during a reception to more dynamic performances that become a highlight of the evening.
I started my professional music career in Cuba, where I studied saxophone at the Amadeo Roldán National Conservatory of Music and began performing in the Cuban jazz scene. One of the most important stages of my early career was playing at La Zorra y El Cuervo, Havana’s legendary jazz club, where I had the opportunity to collaborate with outstanding Cuban and international musicians.
After moving to Costa Rica, I became one of the country’s recognized jazz musicians, performing at festivals, clubs, private events, and cultural projects. I later continued my musical journey in Europe, where I have been working for more than ten years, performing at concerts, corporate events, private celebrations, and prestigious venues such as S1 Studio of Polish Radio, Blue Note Poznań, and Jazz Jamboree Festival.
Throughout my career, I have developed a versatile repertoire combining jazz, Latin jazz, and contemporary music, allowing me to create the right atmosphere for different types of events, f
I have been influenced by many great artists throughout my career, especially musicians who combine technical excellence with a strong personal voice.
My biggest influences include saxophonists such as John Coltrane, Charlie Parker, Sonny Rollins, and Michael Brecker, as well as Latin jazz masters like Paquito D’Rivera and Chucho Valdés. I have also been deeply inspired by Cuban music traditions and artists who brought together jazz, rhythm, and cultural identity.
My favourite artists are those who are able to communicate emotion through their music and create a unique sound that is immediately recognizable. For me, that quality is what makes an artist truly great.
Choosing the greatest song of all time is almost impossible, but one piece that has had a profound impact on me is A Love Supreme by John Coltrane, because of its spiritual depth, creativity, and timeless musical expression.
My typical setup time is approximately 30–45 minutes before the performance, depending on the venue and the equipment required.
For a standard event, my performances usually consist of 2–3 sets of 30–45 minutes each, with breaks in between. The format can be adapted depending on the event schedule, whether it is a cocktail reception, dinner, corporate function, or private celebration.
I am flexible and happy to adjust the timing and format to fit the needs of the event.
Yes, I am happy to perform outdoors, provided that suitable conditions are available.
The performance area should have adequate shelter from direct sunlight, rain, wind, and extreme temperatures, as these conditions can affect both the instrument and the sound equipment. A stable power supply and a safe performance space are also required.
I am happy to discuss the specific requirements depending on the location and type of event.
I am happy to work with clients’ preferences and create a musical atmosphere that matches the style and purpose of the event.
I have a versatile repertoire that includes jazz, Latin jazz, soul, pop, and contemporary arrangements, and I can adapt the selection according to the audience, venue, and occasion. My goal is always to provide a personalized musical experience that enhances the event.
