A guide to booking

Hire Harpists

The harp is one of the few instruments that works equally well as ceremony music, cocktail hour background and formal dinner accompaniment. Professional harpists typically perform on either a full-sized concert pedal harp or a smaller Celtic lever harp, each suited to different venue sizes and musical styles. Pedal harps produce a fuller, richer sound ideal for larger rooms and classical repertoire, while lever harps are more portable and often favoured for Celtic, folk and contemporary arrangements.

What to Expect When Hiring a Harp Player

A typical wedding booking covers 20-30 minutes of prelude music as guests are seated, processional and recessional pieces for the ceremony itself, and optional cocktail hour or reception sets. Most harp performers are happy to take specific song requests, though complex arrangements may need several weeks of preparation. The instrument requires a flat, dry surface and roughly 2x3 metres of floor space, so it is worth discussing access and setup with your venue in advance. Harpists can also work alongside other musicians, pairing particularly well with cellists, flute players or classical singers for a richer ensemble sound. For outdoor events, most performers will need shade and shelter from rain, as moisture and direct sunlight can damage the instrument.

Events and Occasions Suited to Harp Music

Wedding ceremonies remain the most popular occasion for live harp music, but harp players are equally at home at corporate dinners, anniversary celebrations, memorial services and garden parties. The instrument's gentle volume makes it ideal for settings where guests need to hold conversation, unlike louder band setups. Some harpists also offer electric harp performances with loop pedals for a more contemporary sound, which suits modern events and evening receptions. For religious ceremonies, many performers carry repertoire spanning hymns and liturgical pieces alongside secular music. If your event involves a string quartet or wedding ceremony musicians, a harp soloist can often join the ensemble or alternate sets with other performers.

How Much a Harpist Costs

Professional harp players typically charge between $220 and $1,150+ for event performances, with most bookings around $430. A ceremony-only package covering prelude, processional and recessional sits at the lower end, while a full wedding day across ceremony, drinks reception and dinner sits at the top. The main factors affecting price are performance duration, travel distance, instrument transport logistics and whether the booking includes multiple sets across different parts of the day. Concert-trained harpists with extensive classical training may command higher rates. International bookings carry additional costs due to the size and fragility of the instrument, which requires careful transport planning.

If you want a performance that will leave your guests in tears of absolute joy, you must book Mary Mei. For our recent wedding, Mary did not just provide background music—she curated a breathtaking, emotional journey that completely defined the magic of our day. Her ability on the harp, the piano, and the traditional Chinese Guzheng brought an elite level of sophistication and deeply moving artistry that we didn't even know was possible. The absolute highlight of the entire day was our wedding ceremony processional. As the doors opened and I began walking down the aisle, Mary struck the first chords on her gorgeous harp. The acoustics of the room filled with a sound so rich, angelic, and emotionally resonant that it instantly set a tone of pure romance and awe. It felt like stepping directly into a movie scene. Her pacing was flawless, seamlessly matching the energy of the room and creating a deeply personal, sacred moment that none of us will ever forget." Frequently asked questions

Pricing for harpists ranges from $220 to $1,150+, with an average of $430. The cost depends on the harpist's experience, performance length and any specific repertoire requests. A harp provides an elegant, distinctive sound that works particularly well for wedding ceremonies, drinks receptions and formal dinners.

Popular occasions for hiring harpists include wedding ceremonies, drinks receptions, corporate dinners, afternoon teas and formal occasions. The harp's elegant, resonant sound creates a refined and romantic atmosphere.

Many harpists have a varied repertoire that includes popular songs, film scores and contemporary hits arranged for harp alongside classical and traditional pieces. It is worth checking each harpist's profile or discussing repertoire when making an enquiry.

Most harpists need a flat, stable surface and enough space for the harp (approximately 2 by 2 metres). The instrument is heavy and may require step-free access for loading. For outdoor events, shelter from wind and direct sunlight is important. For the best experience, confirm access and setup details with the harpist.

A harp carries well in a quiet room but is easily lost outdoors or against a crowd, so amplification is usual for anything beyond a small gathering. Most players bring a small pickup or microphone and will say what they need once they know the setting and the numbers. Wind is the bigger problem outdoors, as it moves the strings directly rather than simply reducing the volume.

The two in general use are the pedal harp, which is full size and can play in any key, and the smaller lever harp, which suits tighter spaces and gentler settings. Repertoire is the practical difference: some pieces with heavy key changes need the pedal instrument. Players list which they bring, and several own both.

Most ask for 30 to 45 minutes before the first note, as the instrument has to be carried in, positioned and then tuned. A harp brought from a cold vehicle into a warm room drifts noticeably and cannot be tuned accurately until it has settled. Building that into the schedule matters more here than for most instruments.
