Technical Info

What are your basic technical requirements?

For solo piano performances, I require a good-quality acoustic piano or professional digital piano, properly maintained and tuned. A small performance space is sufficient. For trio or quartet performances, I can provide the technical requirements according to the venue and format.

What information do you require about a venue?

I need the venue address, access and load-in information, available piano/equipment, performance space, parking or unloading arrangements, and any sound restrictions or sound limiter.

Do you provide sound and lighting equipment?

For solo piano, I can perform without a PA in smaller venues if the acoustic piano is suitable. For larger venues or ensemble performances, sound reinforcement can be arranged according to the venue's requirements. Lighting can be provided by the venue.

Can you provide a Spotify/DJ service before and between your sets?

No. The Spotify/DJ service is not included in my performance. If required, this can be coordinated separately with me, or arranged independently with another DJ/service.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best gig you've ever done and the best venue you've ever worked at?

I have performed at many festivals and major venues during more than 30 years of professional experience. In terms of audience size, one of the largest was the Francofolies de La Rochelle.

Other significant venues and events include the National Theatre of Algiers, Théâtre Mogador in Paris, Café de la Danse in Paris, Cité de la Musique de Marseille, and Flower Piano in San Francisco, among many others.

I have performed in more than 30 countries, in a wide range of settings, from major festivals and concert halls to jazz clubs and intimate venues.

What's your favourite type of event?

I particularly enjoy solo piano concerts in medium-sized theatres, where the intimate setting allows for a direct and profound connection with the audience.

I also greatly enjoy performing jazz in clubs and at jazz festivals, especially with my trio or quartet, where improvisation, interaction between musicians and the energy of a live audience are central to the experience.

I am equally comfortable in concert halls, festivals, jazz clubs and cultural events, adapting the musical format to the venue and audience.

What's your previous experience and how did you start gigging?

I have more than 30 years of professional experience as a pianist, composer and arranger. I began my career in Cuba in the early 1990s, performing with different groups and working in theatre, television, radio and live concerts.

Since then, I have performed in more than 30 countries, at festivals, major concert halls, jazz clubs and private events, including the Francofolies de La Rochelle, Théâtre National d'Alger, Théâtre Mogador, Café de la Danse, Cité de la Musique de Marseille and Flower Piano in San Francisco.

Which artists have you been most influenced by, who is your favourite artist and what is the greatest song of all time?

My influences come from several musical worlds.

In jazz piano, I have been deeply influenced by Thelonious Monk, Art Tatum and Keith Jarrett. In Latin and jazz piano, important influences include Michel Camilo and Chick Corea.

My classical foundations come from Bach, Mozart and Beethoven. As a songwriter and lover of great melodies, I have also been strongly influenced by The Beatles and Paul McCartney.

From Cuban music, the tradition represented by Buena Vista Social Club has been an important influence.

I don't have a single favourite artist or a single greatest song of all time. What inspires me most is the combination of great melody, harmony, rhythm, improvisation and emotional depth across different musical traditions.

Performance Info

What are your typical setup and performance times?

For a solo piano concert in a theatre, festival or concert hall, I normally arrive 1.5–2 hours before the performance to allow time for the piano, soundcheck and preparation.

For background music, entertainment or private events, the setup is simpler and I usually need around 45–60 minutes.

Performance length is flexible. For concerts, I can perform a full-length programme. For background music or entertainment, I can adapt the duration and number of sets to the event.

Are you happy to perform outside?

Yes, provided there is shade or protection from the sun and weather, a flat stable surface and suitable power supply. The piano/instrument must be protected from rain and humidity

Do the clients have a say in what you play or is it a set repertoire list only?

Clients can request specific songs in advance when appropriate. They can also choose from my repertoire or leave the musical selection to me.

How do previous clients most commonly describe your performances?

I have been producing the Mendocino county professional Pianists Concert Series’ for 33 years, with dozens or fantastic pianists joining us on stage every year. This last year a fellow pianist recommended Alejandro to join the other players at our event, which we are quite particular who plays. He communicated well and showed up when we had arranged….a professional throughout. Needless to say, he ‘blew’ the audience away with his performance, speed and jazz improvisations. He was amazing. Should any venue desire to have a consummate jazz pianist on their bill to ‘wow’ an audience, Alejandro would be a great choice.
