RLJQ is a dynamic Afro-Cuban Jazz quartet based in Ohio. The group is led by the renowned Puerto Rican percussionist and drummer Rolando Matias. RLJQ seamlessly fuses Afro-rhythms with jazz, skillfully maintaining the essence of both genres in their vibrant performances.

Rolando and his ensemble have captivated audiences both nationally and internationally, sharing the stage with Grammy winners such as Brian Lynch, Ray Vega, Bill Summers, Arturo Sandoval, Chucho and Chuchito Valdez, Pascal Bokar, among others.

They have headlined at some of the most prestigious jazz clubs across the United States, including Jazz Alley, Iridium, The Jazz Kitchen, Rusty’s Jazz Cafe, and The Hot House, showcasing their exceptional talent and passion for jazz.

Rolando's releases have garnered critical acclaim, receiving reviews in esteemed publications such as JazzTimes, DownBeat, and Jazziz. Additionally, he has made multiple appearances on BET on Jazz, featuring interviews and performances on Sherry Carter's show, further establishing his presence in the jazz community.

We are R L J Q, an Afro-Cuban jazz quintet proudly based in Central Ohio. Our ensemble features many of the premier musicians in the area with the likes of Eddy Bayard, Michael Cox, or Rob Dixon on reeds, Max Gize, Patrick Richard, or Kendall Bevin guitar, Dean Hulett, Brandon Meeks, or Eddie Brookshire on bass, Michael Haywood, Dean Marcellana, the prodigy Moses Mabarek, or Jon Eshelman on piano and B3 organ, and myself, Rolando, on drums and percussion as the unifying rhythmic glue for the ensemble. Together, we bring a vibrant, dynamic sound that celebrates the rich traditions and contemporary spirit of Afro-Cuban jazz.
