About / Biography

FOGGY — Ambient Trumpet & Live Electronic Jazz

Atmospheric trumpet, chilled jazz-house and live electronics — improvised in the moment.

I’m Phil Hanson, performing as Foggy, a professional trumpeter based near Bordeaux, France. I create live music built around expressive trumpet, atmospheric effects, loops and electronics, moving between ambient jazz, chilled house, cinematic soundscapes and free improvisation.

Rather than simply playing tunes over backing tracks, I treat the trumpet as part of the whole soundscape — using reverb, delay, wah, fuzz and other effects to create something warm, spacious and constantly evolving.

My performances work particularly well where you want sophisticated music that creates an atmosphere without overwhelming the occasion: cocktail receptions, wine bars, restaurants, hotels, private events, art spaces, corporate receptions and relaxed evening events.

I’ve been playing cornet and trumpet for over 45 years. Earlier in my career I performed at venues including the Royal Albert Hall, recorded at Abbey Road Studios, toured internationally and played at the highest level of the British brass-band world with Brighouse & Rastrick.

Today my music is very different. My focus is improvisation, atmosphere and interaction with the space around me. Every performance can develop differently depending on the room, the audience and the mood of the evening.

Think Miles Davis meeting Nils Petter Molvær with a touch of contemporary electronic music — melodic when it needs to be, experimental when the moment allows, and always unmistakably live.

Available for performances in the Bordeaux region and further afield.

If you're looking for something a little different from a conventional solo trumpeter or jazz act, Foggy creates an atmosphere people remember.

Technical Info

What are your basic technical requirements?

I need a performance space of at least 2.5 metres wide and 2 metres deep. I require 2 standard plug sockets and 1 dedicated parking space close to the venue.

What information do you require about a venue?

I need to know directions to the venue and info on the right place to park and where to load in my equipment. I also need to be informed if there’s a sound limiter in the venue and what time I can get in to set up and soundcheck.

Do you provide sound and lighting equipment?

I bring my own PA system to all my gigs. I don't provide lighting.

Can you provide a Spotify/DJ service before and between your sets?

Yes I can play spotify playlists before I play, in the break in between sets and for up to 30 minutes after my final set. I am happy to choose the music myself or have the client provide a playlist to play.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best gig you've ever done and the best venue you've ever worked at?

The best recent gig I did was playing roaming jazz for a wedding at Château de la Valouze in La Roche Chalais, France. The best venue I've played is the Royal Albert Hall, I have been fortunate to play there several times.

What's your favourite type of event?

I am happy to play most types of events but weddings are my favourite.

What's your previous experience and how did you start gigging?

I have played trumpet and previously cornet for over 4 decades. In 2009 I re-trained myself as a Jazz & Blues Trumpeter, my playing style is free improvisation. I have performed in concert halls all over the UK and in North America & Europe. Outside of performing I am a recording artist, having played on numerous albums as a member of various bands and classical groups, and most recently also as a session musician. I have my own music on spotify as well as various musical collaborations which I have been part of. During the pandemic I spent a lot of time recording and releasing music from my home studio. After the pandemic was over I returned to gigging with various local bands and began to focus on my solo work. I am highly proficient and have an original style of playing. I play a very unique looking black plastic trumpet and I use several guitar pedals to help create unique sounds and effects.

Which artists have you been most influenced by, who is your favourite artist and what is the greatest song of all time?

As a trumpeter I am most influenced by Miles Davis and Nils Petter Molvaer. For me, the greatest song of all time is probably Freddie Freeloader by Miles Davis

Performance Info

What are your typical setup and performance times?

I like to arrive 1-2 hours before the performance starts. I need about 20-30 mins to set up and 10-15 mins to soundcheck is usually sufficient. I normally play 2 x 45 - 60 minute sets with a 20 minute break half way, however I am also happy to be flexible around the client needs.

Are you happy to perform outside?

I am happy to play outside but I would ask for shade for the electronics if it's sunny/super hot, or some cover if it's raining.

Do the clients have a say in what you play or is it a set repertoire list only?

I am specifically not a cover musician. I am happy to play 1 or 2 covers if I know what they are 2 weeks in advance of the gig. The rest of the music I play however is original music or generic background music which I would typically choose myself and agree with the client. I am very happy to send some audio or video of me playing some of the tracks ahead of time, so the client can feel comfortable with what I will be playing and to make any tweaks as needed.

How do previous clients most commonly describe your performances?

I have been told that my background music is just loud enough so it's clearly heard, but not too loud so people can't hear themselves talking. Also I have been told that people have never seen a trumpet player using a wah guitar pedal before, this seems to intrigue some people! My performances are also described as relaxing and my trumpet playing has been described as world class. Finally, a lot of clients and audience members have said that my music is "very cool and chilled".
