Moderate Sounds is the DJ side of Moderate Studio, a creative practice based in Buxton in the Peak District. I play weddings, bars, clubs, corporate events and private parties across the Peak District, Derbyshire, Cheshire and Manchester, and further out for the right night.
Sets are built from disco, soul, funk, house and indie, with room to go deeper into jazz, jungle and Balearic when the night wants it. I play vinyl or digital, whichever suits the room, from a record collection played on rotation.
Every booking starts with a conversation, not a fixed set list. For weddings I can cover the whole day, from the ceremony and drinks through to the evening party, or just the evening set once the formalities are done. I read the room, build the night gradually and work around the songs that matter to you, keeping the volume where people can still talk early on and lifting it when the floor is ready.
I have played residencies and one-off nights at venues across Manchester and Cheshire, including Wallop and The Reach at Piccadilly, as well as weddings, store launches and brewery events.
I bring my own professional sound system and a microphone for speeches and announcements. I also offer PA hire on its own: Yamaha speakers, mixing desks and wireless microphones, delivered, set up and tested, with a sound engineer on site if you would like one. For fields, gardens and off-grid venues there is a fully solar-powered sound system that runs a whole event with no generator and no mains.
Tell me the date, the place and the kind of night you have in mind, and I will come back with what I would bring.

I need a space of around 3m x 2m for the DJ booth and speakers, ideally on a level, dry surface, plus 2 x 13 amp power sockets close by. A parking space as near to the load-in point as possible makes set-up quicker and quieter. For outdoor events with no mains power, I can bring a battery or solar-powered system instead, so just let me know in advance.
It helps to know the address, the best place to park and where to load in, along with the name and number of a contact on the day. Please let me know about any access restrictions, such as stairs, narrow doorways or set-up times, and whether the venue has a sound limiter or a noise curfew, so I can plan the set and the system around it. For weddings, a rough running order with the timings for speeches, the first dance and the end of the night is really useful too.
Yes, I’m fully self-contained. I bring a professional Yamaha sound system scaled to the room, with a wireless microphone for speeches and announcements, plus lighting for the dance floor. Everything is set up and tested before guests arrive. I can also provide a separate sound system for an outdoor ceremony or a drinks reception in another space.
Yes. I’m a DJ, so I can look after the music for the whole event, from background music during the ceremony, drinks and dinner through to the evening party. If you have a playlist of your own or songs you’d love to hear, send them over beforehand and I’ll work them in. If you’d rather leave it to me, I’ll choose music to suit the mood at each part of the day.
Yes. As well as the evening DJ set, I can provide a separate sound system with wireless microphones for the ceremony, drinks reception and speeches, so vows, readings and toasts are heard clearly by everyone, indoors or out. I can stay on site through the day, move the system between spaces and make sure the right music is ready for the entrance, the signing of the register and the walk back down the aisle.
Yes. I run a fully solar-powered sound system, charged by the sun, with no generator, no fumes and no hum. It's ideal for weddings in fields and gardens, festivals, fetes, races and off-grid venues around the Peak District and beyond. It has powered a full four-hour set at a village fete with no generator in sight. Battery-powered options are also available for smaller events.
One of my favourite gigs was a 60th birthday party at a beautiful photography studio with its own bar. The main room had a huge vaulted ceiling and the lighting was just right, and my music was piped through to every part of the party. The guests came to dance, and the floor stayed full from start to finish, with everyone grooving all night. Those are the parties I love most.
For the best venue, I’d pick a small, intimate countryside wedding in a space transformed especially for the day. I played one in a Peak District village hall. On paper it was a typical village hall, but the couple and their friends and family had decorated it so lovingly that it felt really special. That personal touch made it one of the best rooms I’ve ever played.
I enjoy all kinds of events, and each one brings something different. Weddings are brilliant because everyone is there to celebrate and up for a dance. Corporate events push me in a different direction, since it isn’t just party tunes, and I enjoy thinking more carefully about the mood and the music. And I love a good club night, where I can really dig in and play the records I’m most excited about.
I’ve been around the music scene for years, playing weddings, private parties, bars, clubs and corporate events. What keeps me going is simple: I love seeing people smile and dance. At every gig I’m asking myself how I can lift the room and make the night feel special for the people in it. Years of gigging have taught me that’s what it’s all about.I’ve been around the music scene for years, playing weddings, private parties, bars, clubs and corporate events. Honestly, that’s an impossible one for a DJ! I’ve got thousands of tracks across lots of genres, and I love all sorts of music. The right song always depends on the moment. At a wedding, nothing gets a dance floor going like a bit of ABBA. On a Sunday afternoon in a bar, I love playing vinyl while people eat their roast, maybe some jazz or a bit of Neil Young’s On the Beach. And at a club night, it’s funky house and disco edits all the way.
Both. I have a large record collection and love playing vinyl, especially for relaxed afternoon sets, drinks receptions and Sunday sessions where the warmth of records really suits the room. For weddings and busier parties I usually play digital, which lets me respond instantly to requests and switch styles as the night builds. I'm happy to mix the two, or to play an all-vinyl set if that's what you'd like.
arrive at least an hour before the start time to set up and soundcheck, so everything is ready and running quietly before guests arrive. I then play for the length of set we’ve agreed, whether that’s a two-hour evening set or music across the whole day. Packing down usually takes around 30 to 45 minutes once the music finishes. If the venue has fixed access times or an earlier set-up is needed, just let me know and I’ll plan around it.
Yes, I’m very happy to play outdoors, for ceremonies, garden parties, festivals and summer events. All I need is a covered area, such as a gazebo, marquee or awning, to protect the equipment if it rains. Where there’s no mains power, I can bring a battery or solar-powered system, so a field or garden with no electricity isn’t a problem.
Clients absolutely have a say. There’s no fixed set list. Before the event, I’ll talk with you about the music you love, the songs that mean something to you and anything you’d rather not hear. A shared Spotify playlist is an easy way to collect requests, and I’ll weave those into the night alongside music I know will suit the crowd. On the night, I’m also happy to take requests from guests where they fit.
Clients most often describe me as professional, fun and great at reading the room. They tell me the music was spot on and the night just flowed. A wedding couple said I took the time to understand what they wanted beforehand and then delivered it perfectly, and a Manchester venue that has booked me many times says I always give the room exactly what it needs.
Of course. Just as important as the songs you love are the ones you'd rather never hear again. Send over anything that's off limits, whether that's a particular artist, a cheesy party classic or a song with the wrong memories attached, and it won't get played, even if a guest asks for it.
I'm based in Buxton and cover the whole of the Peak District and Derbyshire, including Bakewell, Castleton, Chapel-en-le-Frith, Tideswell and Leek, as well as Cheshire (Macclesfield, Knutsford, Congleton) and Greater Manchester (Stockport, Didsbury and the city centre). I'm happy to travel further for the right event, so just ask.
