Riccardo La Barbera è pianista, compositore, insegnante, performer, improvvisatore.

Nato a Voghera nel 1974 in una famiglia che ha visto nel tempo l’esprimersi di artisti e musicisti, dai 12 anni studia pianoforte classico con il Maestro Aldo Niccolai, passa poi al piano moderno con diversi pianisti italiani tra cui Umberto Petrin e Riccardo Zegna e partecipa a numerosi workshop in Italia sul jazz e l'improvvisazione. La passione per il Jazz nasce quando era adolescente ascoltando il brano I’m A Fool I Want You della grande cantante americana Billie Holiday, ed è attraverso le note di pianisti come Lennie Tristano, Thelonious Monk e Cecil Taylor che decide di seguire ed appoggiarsi definitivamente a questo genere. Inizia ad esibirsi in formazioni rock, soul e di musica popolare e contemporaneamente nel jazz in piano solo, duo, trio e quartetto per poi trasferirsi a Roma nel 2005, perfezionando e completando ulteriormente le modalità espressive pianistiche e usando la voce e il corpo come linguaggi improvvisativi; nel suo set aggiunge strumenti elettro-acustici come radio, megafoni, giradischi, diffusori sonori di varia potenza. Integra le performance con collettivi di improvvisazione di teatro e danza, pittori di live painting, musicisti elettronici, dj's, giocolieri e video artisti. Perfeziona una personale tecnica che vede quindi sempre l’utilizzo e l’integrazione del pianoforte, dei sintetizzatori e l'uso del piano preparato: gli spettacoli che si creano sono multiformi e sempre diversi, la musica è parte integrante della scena diviene la stanza sonora dell'evento. Dal 2011 si ristabilisce tra Pavia e Milano dove registra alcuni album in piano solo e con collaborazioni di producer di musica elettronica, rap e nu-jazz. Ha all’attivo più di trenta pubblicazioni in svariate situazioni differenti, come ospite o leader, compresi lavori con etichette discografiche e autoproduzioni. Nel 2014 scrive il manuale “Lezioni di piano” (Dino Audino Editore) che racchiude elementi delle ricerche ed esperienze della sua didattica sul pianoforte e teoria musicale. Insegna da oltre 20 anni in scuole di musica e privatamente a Roma, Milano, nella provincia di Pavia e di Alessandria. Alterna attualmente l’attività di pianista jazz anche in teatri e jazz club su navi da crociera.
