Musical stories through which this (pop) folk band, with its roots in Dendermonde, aims to amaze, inspire and, above all, bring joy to people once again!

Roots drew its inspiration from Irish and Celtic influences. However, this energetic group has very diverse musical backgrounds (folk, jazz, classical…). It is perhaps this symbiosis of influences that makes the group’s sound unique. With a fairly extensive range of instruments, the group makes folk music accessible to a wide audience. Traditional tunes and original songs, rousing instrumental pieces or harmonious vocals – you get it all. It’s certainly going to be hard to sit still…

A bit of Roots – history

The band first performed under the name ‘Roots’ at the M’Eire Morough folk festival in Dendermonde in 2010. In this line-up, the band released their first EP in 2011: ‘Back to Barley’.

Afterwards, the line-up changed significantly and the group began performing a much larger proportion of their own material. This resulted in their debut album: ‘Point Blue’ (2014). Three years later, their second album followed: ‘Rewind’ (2017). Both albums were recorded in collaboration with Erwin Libbrecht (Kadril) under the Wild Boar Music label. The ‘Rewind’ programme is still performed (occasionally).

In 2020, the group collaborated with Eva De Roovere on the show ‘Over muren’. The single of the same name was released in August 2020. For those who missed the show, it can be viewed in full on the Roots-music YouTube channel. Following this collaboration, Roots also released their own songs in Dutch for the first time.

With ‘Bal Sjanté’ (2023), Roots now also performs a ‘sung folk ball’. This marked the group’s entry into the ball circuit, which is inextricably linked to folk music. They do so with the same robust energy that characterises the band and with a broad, sung repertoire. Even the most entrenched spectator at the bar will find themselves moving without realising it! From 2026, Roots will be performing this programme with a slightly altered line-up.
