About / Biography

Stephen Sylvia is originally from a musical family in Rhode Island. He started playing the sax at the age of 10. He has played in bands in Southern California, and throughout Arizona. His band, The San Diego Beat Organization, was runner up to the Jason Mraz band in the San Diego Band of the Year awards. He has played in straight ahead, & contemporary jazz bands, a big band, funk, blues, ska, and pop genres.

Stephen is an experienced saxophonist known for his energetic, powerful saxophone style which gets people to the dance floor, but he also brings high emotions and excitement to the events when performing romantic love songs.

Stephen plays three saxophones; soprano, alto, & tenor. He has played at cocktail parties, weddings, restaurants, bars, private parties, and corporate gigs. Some of his influences include; David Sanborn, Eric Marienthal‎, Jr Walker, Grover Washington Jr, Warren Hill, Tom Scott and Gerald Albright.

Extraordinarily versatile with his repertoire, providing background music for his solo performance or improvises alongside a DJ using his knowledge and training from jazz music.

What are your basic technical requirements?

Electrical outlet within 50 feet. I need Lighting and overhead if outdoors.


What information do you require about a venue?

I need to know if I am indoor or outdoor.


Do you provide sound and lighting equipment?

I bring my own PA equipment but if I am playing with DJ, I usually play along with his equipment.


Can you provide a Spotify/DJ service before and between your sets?

Yes I can provide Spotify during my breaks.


Do you provide your own sound equipment?

Yes. Stephen provides high-quality professional PA equipment suitable for events of up to approximately 300 guests, depending on the venue and event requirements.


What are your outdoor performance requirements?

Outdoor performances require a covered performance area and access to a standard electrical outlet within approximately 50 feet of the performance area.

What is the best gig you've ever done and the best venue you've ever worked at?

One of Stephen's most memorable performances was at Danza del Sol Winery in California. He has also performed at prominent Arizona venues including Paradise Valley Country Club and Wrigley Mansion. His favorite wedding performance was at the Desert Botanical Garden in Phoenix.


What's your favourite type of event?

My favorite events are high-energy celebrations where I can interact with the crowd and play live sax alongside a DJ. I especially enjoy getting out on the dance floor and performing with the DJ to create an exciting, interactive experience.


What's your previous experience and how did you start gigging?

Stephen has been playing saxophone since childhood, inspired by artists such as David Sanborn. He performed with bands and a 30-piece big band throughout Southern California, including a Band of the Year–winning group that went on to open for Jason Mraz. He later transitioned to performing as a solo artist and has since performed at weddings, cocktail parties, private celebrations, sporting events, corporate events, and festivals throughout Arizona and California.


Which artists have you been most influenced by, who is your favourite artist and what is the greatest song of all time?

My biggest saxophone influences include David Sanborn, Grover Washington Jr., Boney James, Gerald Albright, Steve Cole, Clarence Clemons, Junior Walker, Sonny Rollins, and John Coltrane. I’m also heavily influenced by artists such as Stevie Wonder, Elton John, and Earth, Wind & Fire, whose music has shaped my approach to melody, groove, and performance.

Stephen typically arrives approximately 45 minutes before the performance to set up and sound-check. Performances are generally customized to the event schedule. Approximately 30 minutes is needed for breakdown after the performance.

Yes. Stephen regularly performs at both indoor and outdoor events. Outdoor performances require a covered performance area and access to a standard electrical outlet within approximately 50 feet of the performance area.
