Simon's musical journey began when he first discovered the violin during his junior school days. However, his father's old clarinet exerted a powerful allure on him, leading him to switch instruments and pursue clarinet lessons. With remarkable progress, he achieved Grade 8 by the age of twelve. At fourteen, Simon delved into the world of the saxophone, and within the same year, he landed his first paid performances. In his music college years, while pursuing a classical music degree, he immersed himself in jazz, spending his days studying Stravinsky and his nights captivating audiences with the sounds of Charlie Parker in London's vibrant clubs.
Presently, Simon holds the esteemed position of Saxophone Professor for the Royal Marines and British Army, where his reputation is defined by his remarkable versatility and instrumental mastery. His exceptional playing can be heard in a plethora of mediums, including advertisements, film scores, television and radio shows, theme tunes, and popular recordings. Throughout his career, Simon has collaborated with a multitude of notable artists spanning various genres. From Jamie Cullum to Kylie Minogue, Elvis Costello to Dizzee Rascal, Van Morrison to David Benoit, Lulu to Chaka Khan, Seal to Alfie Boe, John Dankworth and Cleo Laine to Bill Bruford, Steve Gadd and Peter Erskine to The London Concert Orchestra, and the Brighouse and Rastrick Brass Band—his musical partnerships have been diverse and extensive. Additionally, Simon has served as the musical director for esteemed vocalists such as Rick Astley, Alexander Armstrong, and Bette Midler, showcasing his leadership skills. Notably, he has also conducted performances with the BBC Singers and the Orchestra of the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields. In addition to leading his own Big Band, Simon actively performs with several smaller ensembles.
Recognised for his exceptional talent, Simon Bates proudly represents Yamaha Custom Saxophones, BG Music Products, SYOS Mouthpieces and Vandoren Reeds as an endorsed artist.

Large repertoire from jazz, funk to soul and pop.
Depending on the size of the band or musicians, a stage large enough and with appropriate power sockets is required.
Any additional information or special requirements for the venue. A contact name and phone number in advance is very useful!
Small PA and minimal lights can be supplied. Larger gigs will require 3rd party equipment hire.
Yes. Happy to play Spotify set or appropriate background music.
Difficult to say, but I performed in the house band for Pete Waterman's 25th anniversary at the O2 with Rick Astley (I was with him for 10 years!), Kylie Minogue, Jason Donovan, Bananarama, Steps etc. The Singapore Grand Prix and gigs with Van Morrison were pretty special too!
I love all types of events. Playing for an appreciative audience is the best!
Started saxophone at 14 and gigging professionally at 15. I've worked with many famous artists including Van Morrison, Elvis Costello, Jamie Cullum, Lulu, Chaka Khan, Seal, Heather Small, Kylie Minogue, Dizzee Rascal, Limahl; and many well known jazz artists including The Zappatistas, John Dankworth, Cleo Laine, Ronnie Scott’s All Stars, Eddie Daniels, and Steve Gadd. I've also conducted the BBC Singers and Academy of St Martin in the Fields and served as Musical Director for renowned artists including Rick Astley, Alexander Armstrong, and Bette Midler.
That's such a difficult question. My Dad taught me that there are only two types of music - Good music and Bad music. I love a vintage saxophonist called Paul Desmond, but I don't really play like him! My favourite song is called Emily.
Set-up takes less than an hour. Solo gigs are normally 2 x 45 minutes with band gigs 2 x 1 hour.
Yes, but with shade or cover for inclement or changes in weather and a dedicated performance area with a power supply reasonably close.
Yes, they do, but usually it's more a style than specific songs. Learning a new set each time I gig is not an option!
Playing something for everyone!
