About / Biography

People like me because I focus on looking after them. I have learnt the art of making a day special and tailored to a couple’s needs. I am experienced enough to find out and analyse what my clients want and vary my performance appropriately on the day. At a wedding I play a leading part of a team to ensure that everyone gives their best.

Not all my work is at weddings. I have looked after charity dinners with their Royal Highnesses the Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Michael of Kent, and the Duke of Gloucester. I was the Toastmaster at the millennium night celebrations in Monaco in the presence of HSH Prince Albert of Monaco. I have worked with other members of the Royal Family in castles and palaces. At dinners, conferences and awards ceremonies I have looked after VIPs from Prime Ministers to Lord Mayors, from Lord-Lieutenants and High Sheriffs to conglomerate Presidents.

With British and international clients from Florida and Los Angeles to Hong Kong and Singapore, no other Toastmaster has travelled so far to look after such a wide range of over 1,000 events for so many dignitaries and celebrities - or visited as many prestigious venues and used as many languages. I have taken trouble to learn about the traditions of Jewish, Moslem, Hindu and can advise about mixed-faith celebrations. I make announcements in French, German, Polish, Spanish, Italian, Urdu, Gujarati, Punjabi and even a spattering of Mandarin.

· Every event is handled in the same calm and efficient way as if the participants are royalty.

· Hosts and couples appreciate my reassuring, friendly and professional style.

· If it’s appropriate, I like to use humour in my presentation.

- More than 30 years experience at over 1,000 events

“Thank you so much for all your help. Everyone had a fabulous day and evening. Many guests said it was a fantastic wedding and one they would never forget. We are all so pleased it went well. Thank you again Sir for all your input and wisdom which was much appreciated by everyone and especially me and my wife.” IC 2018

Weddings

No two brides are identical and so no two weddings are the same. Each venue is different and an appropriate style of performance is required for each. These days a Toastmaster needs to be experienced enough to deal with a Christian, Jewish or Asian wedding in England, flexible enough to perform appropriately to suit the cultural and thematic needs of each type of event and confident enough to drive the wedding forward without stealing the limelight. Having worked at over 1,000 events, in the UK and abroad, for over 30 years Paul regularly demonstrates that he has the necessary experience, flair and determination to bring together your team of suppliers and guide a wedding appropriately - and he is cheerful and humorous as well! Wedding venues have been teepees and marquees in fields, a badminton court, private dining rooms with 20 guests, Thames boats, stately homes, castles and palaces.

Celebrities

Paul has worked with many celebrities over the years and some of them are Jeffrey Archer, Nicola Benedetti, Brian Blessed, Rabbi Lionel Blue, Gyles Brandreth, Rory Bremner, Bruce Forsyth, Andrew Neil, Michael Portillo, Garry Richardson, Gaby Roslin, Bryn Terfel, and Ashley and Pudsey.

Corporate Events

From straightforward dinners with perhaps Receiving Line, Grace, Dinner and Speeches to multi-media Awards ceremonies and conferences Paul is familiar with handling fast-paced events and making sure that they run on time. He efficiently moves large numbers of guests from a reception to a banqueting suite. He brings a large audience to order with ease and capably looks after high-profile speakers, delegates and guests from Lord Mayors to international CEOs and the man in the street who is nervous about making his speech. When Royalty are involved with your event, Paul can give valuable advice based on experience with UK and International Royal families.

Charity Events

Whether it's 1,000 people in a large hotel or fifty VIPs the focus has to be on the charity and making sure that the guests understand that they are there to donate. In dispensing simply with the formalities of the evening, Paul's lively performance makes sure that the guests focus on enjoying themselves and are attentive and informed about the activities going on around them.

From formal to frivolous you will see an appropriate performance which will amuse and relax your guests and encourage giving.

International Events

With a touch of British sang-froid, or a smattering of a local language, Paul can look after events in English, French, German, Italian, Polish, Spanish, Punjabi and Gujarati. Very happy to work with organisers for other languages, but has been known to struggle with Cantonese and Mandarin! Past international work includes weddings and dinners in Las Vegas, Los Angeles, New York, Florida, Jersey, Guernsey, Isle of Man, France, Gibraltar, Monaco, Spain, Malta, Cyprus, Hong Kong and Singapore

Technical Info

What are your basic technical requirements?

I require no specific technical setup. Access to a handheld microphone is appreciated for larger events, though I am equally comfortable working without amplification.

What information do you require about a venue?

A planning meeting approximately one month prior to your event will cover most details. At that stage, I find it helpful to have an outline of the venue layout, timings for the day, and key contacts such as the event manager or catering team. Advance access and parking information also helps ensure a smooth and well-prepared arrival.

Do you provide sound and lighting equipment?

I do not provide sound or lighting equipment, but I am very happy to work with venue teams, DJs or production suppliers to ensure announcements and coordination run seamlessly.

Can you provide a Spotify/DJ service before and between your sets?

I do not provide DJ or music services, but I work closely alongside DJs, bands and venue teams to ensure smooth transitions and clear communication throughout the event.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best gig you've ever done and the best venue you've ever worked at?

Probably millenium night in Monaco with HSH Prince Albert of Monaco and several members of European Royal families and then seeing the dawn of 1st January 2000 on the roof of the venue with half a dozen other people.

What's your favourite type of event?

My favourite events are those where everything needs to come together properly, where timing, atmosphere and the overall experience really matter. That could be a wedding, a formal dinner, a corporate function or a private celebration, but they all share the expectation that the event will run smoothly and feel well organised without ever seeming over-managed.

I’m at my best in exactly those situations, bringing structure, calm and clear coordination so that each part of the event flows naturally into the next. Much of my role is about anticipating what’s needed and ensuring things happen at the right moment, often before anyone realises.

What I enjoy most is seeing hosts able to relax and enjoy their own event, confident everything is in hand, while guests simply experience a well-run and enjoyable occasion. When it all feels effortless and runs exactly as it should, that’s when I know I’ve done my job well.

What's your previous experience and how did you start gigging?

I began my career in professional Toastmastering through a passion for well-run, properly structured events, and have since worked across a wide range of occasions including weddings, formal dinners and corporate functions in the UK and internationally. Over time, my work has developed through experience at leading venues and alongside a variety of event professionals, refining a calm, organised and quietly authoritative style.

Which artists have you been most influenced by, who is your favourite artist and what is the greatest song of all time?

Not directly applicable to my role as a Toastmaster and Celebrant, although I do appreciate the importance of music and atmosphere within an event. I work closely with DJs, bands and musicians to ensure everything flows seamlessly and each moment lands as intended

Performance Info

What are your typical setup and performance times?

Setup: One hour before the event
Planning meeting one month before the event
Usually 8 hours per event

Are you happy to perform outside?

Yes

Do the clients have a say in what you play or is it a set repertoire list only?

Every event is tailored to the client. Rather than working from a fixed ‘set list’, I work closely with you in advance to understand the style, tone and structure you would like for your event. From formal announcements to key moments during the day, everything is agreed beforehand to reflect your preferences while ensuring the event flows smoothly and to time.

How do previous clients most commonly describe your performances?

Clients most often describe my work as calm, professional and reassuring, someone who brings structure and organisation without ever taking over the event. I’m frequently told that I strike the right balance between being visible when needed and unobtrusive when not, ensuring everything runs smoothly behind the scenes.

They also tend to comment on the sense of confidence it gives them, knowing that timings are being managed, guests are guided appropriately, and nothing is left to chance. Above all, clients appreciate being able to relax and enjoy their own event, safe in the knowledge that everything is in hand and being handled with care and attention to detail.
