Founded by ex Londoner, Steve Wolff in 2015, Wolff (Powered Up) is a 3 piece band featuring guitar, bass, drums and vocals. We play "60s-90s Rock Classics From Both Sides Of The Pond & Beyond" (e.g U2, Police, Clash, Dire Straits, INXS, Who) with popular US standards (Doors, Steve Miller Band, Tom Petty, Jimmy Eat World, Black Keys) & many more.
While this lineaup has a full, high-energy sound, we have a scalable PA and various sizes of drums, so we can rock out at a comfortable volume at different sized venues, We play venues and parties of all sizes such as pubs all the way up to outdoor concerts throughout San Diego County and sometimes a bit beyond.
We can provide stage lights, too.
This trio is one of several acts under the Wolff "umbrella", which also includes both plugged in solo and duo versions as well as a parallel "Almost Unplugged" act, which performs solo, duo or trio.

Does the venue have a house PA or do we bring our own?
If the venue has a house PA, is there a venue provided sound person?
Does the venue have its own lighting system or do we bring ours?
What is the load-in/ load out logistics with respect to how much time is available before the event?
What is the parking situation?
Does the venue/ organizer provide food/ beverage at no charge for the band and if so, what limits?
We have a full, scalable PA system and our stage lights
Yes, we can either play our selection (via Apple Music) or we can plug the venues' sound source via a channel to our board (XLR, RCA or ¼" TR) or bluetooth.
We treat every venue like it's going to be the best. Everywhere is different and we enjoy playing both smaller and larger venues. On the larger side, our favorites have been Campland On The Bay (San Diego), Scripps Ranch Concert in the Park, Coronado Ferry Landings park, Santee Lakes Summer Concerts and Del Mar Plaza Summer Concerts. For smaller venues we've played many pubs and both public and private clubs in the greater San Diego area. Regardless of the facility, it's crucial for us to have a good working relationship and mutual respect with the venue owner/ organizer
Any venue or event where there's a lively attentive and ideally dancing audience. Different types of venues have their unique rewards for us, so it's hard to pick a favorite; we just love playing music for people!
I became a semi-professional musician out of necessity when I first moved to the USA from London UK to get my Master’s degree. When my already meager UK scholarship stipend to Stanford arrived, it had been devalued by 50% by the investor George Soros' devaluation of the UK pound. With no work permit, my only financial option was to get a band together and play Frat and Dorm parties. Fortunately, that was during the period when British punk and New Wave was starting to get popular in the US. That put me and my first US band (British Wire Gauge) in a unique position relative to other campus bands. In addition to the cash, it was a lot of fun, so I kept playing.
After moving to San Diego , I started playing solo 20 years ago this year (2026), which I still do. I joined several bands, playing guitar or bass & singing. Wolff formed gradually when I replaced first the bass & later the drum tracks on my laptop with real musicians. We've performed over 400 gigs in San Diego.
I'm strongly influenced by 70s and 80s guitar-intensive bands including The Who, U2, The Police, Simple Minds, Billy Idol and many more - it's hard to pick a favorite.
Depending on the gear we need, set up can be as short as 45 min or up to 2 hours for a gig with full-sized drum kit. We normally perform 45 min sets, but on occasion have played 2 hours straight through. Our record was the Las Vegas Rock and Roll Marathon, where we played for 6 hours straight - with the occasion "instrumentation solos" to accommodate bathroom breaks!
Yes, San Diego is perfect for that. If it's really hot, we prefer shade but we have a 10 x 10 ft canopy we can bring (extra cost for that) if it gets over ~90 F.
No "singing in the rain" gigs for us, but that's generally not an issue in San Diego!
Clients can choose from our extensive playlist of roughly 125 tunes or just give us general guidelines and we can pick tunes in accordance. We typically don't play songs "on the fly"/ unpracticed.
Venues and patrons alike have told us that they like that we play songs that most other bands in San Diego rarely play. Others have complemented us on our sound system.
We have a number of bars/ pubs/ venues that repeatedly contact us to perform. One repeat client (a bar/ restaurant chain): recently texted me: "you guys always bring the vibe, whichever lineup you use".
We use wide field-of-view Bose speakers, so the sound is distributed across the audience and not "forward peaked" which can happen with conventional main speakers. Also, for smaller venues, we plug our guitar and bass effects processors/ amp emulators directly into the board rather than using amplifiers, so everything is controlled from the master volume sliders. We find that it makes for a more controllable and better balanced sound.
Also, we generally use in-ear monitors, which cuts down on stage noise that can increase the volume and detract from the sound quality that reaches our audiences, especially if we're against a wall or other reflective surface.
Finally, before playing, we'll talk to the organizer about signaling us if we're too loud or not loud enough.
Regardless, we watch how the audience communicates; if people have to lean-in to each other to hear themselves talk, it's likely we're too loud and adjust the PA volume accordingly.
