Ex Londoner Steve Wolff's "Almost Unplugged" act has been entertaining audiences all over San Diego county since 2006 with playing acoustic versions versions of "'60s-Today's Pop/Rock classics from Both Sides of the Pond and Beyond". After many years playing solo, Wolff added a Cajon in 2022 and a female vocalist in 2025 to give more options to our song selection and our unique sound. We can play as a trio but also as two types of duo: 1) guitar, male vocals and cajon & 2) guitar with both male and female vocals
Wolff Almost Unplugged uses a semi-acoustic guitar plugged into guitar and vocal effects processors and loopers, giving a more energetic and diverse sound than acoustic alone, though we can play fully acoustic as an alternative, too.

Does the venue have a house PA or do we bring our own?
If the venue has a house PA, is there a venue provided sound person?
Does the venue have its own lighting system or do we bring ours?
What is the load-in/ load out logistics?
What is the parking situation?
Does the venue/ organizer provide food/ beverage at no charge for the band and if so, what limits?
We have a compact, scalable PA system and our own stage lights
Yes, we can either play our selection (via Apple Music) or we can plug the venues' sound source via a channel to our board (XLR, RCA or ¼" TR) or bluetooth.
We've played smaller pubs, restaurants and outdoor concerts in the greater San Diego area. They're all different and all have been a lot of fun; it's hard to pick a favorite.
Any venue or event where there's an appreciative, ideally attentive audience. Different venues have their unique rewards for us, so it's hard to pick a favorite; we just love playing music for people!
Regardless of the facility, it's crucial for us to have a good, mutually respectful working relationship with the venue owner/ organizer; something we strive for with all our partners.
I became a semi-professional musician out of necessity when I first moved to the USA from London UK to Stanford to get my Master’s degree. When my already meager UK scholarship was devalued 50% by the investor George Soros' devaluation of the UK pound & with no work permit, my only financial option was to get a band together and play Frat and Dorm parties.
My acoustic career started years later by chance in a remote hotel in the Peru jungle. The place turned off all but 1 light after dark. With nothing to do, I found an old acoustic guitar & started playing & singing an Elvis Costello song. When I stopped, there was a round of applause; I looked up and had an audience, calling for more! My first solo gig & in the jungle!
When I got back to San Diego , I bought an acoustic guitar & a friend found me a restaurant gig, which led to others. Over time, I honed my sound, adding harmonizers & loop stations & different guitars until I settled on my Tayler T5z .
I'm strongly influenced by 70s and 80s guitar-intensive bands including The Who, U2, The Police, Simple Minds, Billy Idol and many more - it's hard to pick a favorite.
Our set up can be as short as 30 min, but is typically around 45 min.
We normally perform up to three 45 min sets in an evening. We're flexible if some venues want fewer longer sets.
Yes, San Diego is perfect for that. If it's really hot, we prefer shade but we have a 10 x 10 ft canopy we can bring (extra cost for that) if it gets over ~90 F.
No "singing in the rain" gigs for us, but that's generally not an issue in San Diego!
Clients can choose from our playlist of roughly 75 tunes (we're always adding new songs) or they just give us general guidelines (e.g era) and we can pick tunes accordingly. We typically don't play songs "on the fly"/ unpracticed.
Venues and patrons alike have told us that they like that we play songs that most other bands in San Diego rarely play. Others have complemented us on our sound system.
We have a number of bars/ pubs/ venues that repeatedly contact us to perform. One repeat client (a bar/ restaurant chain): recently texted me: "you guys always bring the vibe, whichever lineup you use".
We use either one or two main Bose speakers, depending on the venue. These speakers have a wide field-of-view so the sound is distributed across the audience and not "forward peaked" which can happen with main speakers.
We don't use amplifiers; we plug our guitar effects processor into the board, so everything is controlled from the PA master volume sliders. We find that it makes for a more controllable & better balanced sound.
Also, we generally use in-ear monitors, which cuts down on stage noise that can increase the volume and detract from the sound quality that reaches our audiences, especially if we're against a wall or other reflective surface.
Before playing, we'll ask the organizer to signal us if we're too loud or not loud enough & regardless, we also ask & watch the audience; if people have to lean-in to each other to hear themselves talk, it's likely we're too loud and we adjust the PA volume accordingly.
