" Statement of intent: Notes ‘n Strokes-The art of making music and the music of making art. 2014 I have since 1997 after graduating from the Johannesburg Art Foundation, been engaged in a variety of visual art related projects in and around Gauteng. My research/ theme were to study and paint music more especially the music of The Sangomas (South African Traditional Healers).Paint the music they play when they set off to Twasa ( get their formal training) and the music they engage in on their return from their practices. To continuously paint it on occasional days of their festivities and ceremonies when they seek guidance from the greater spirits through an array of feasts. I then produced enormous amount of artworks based on this phenomenon and as time progressed I graduated into getting involved with live music bands other than that of The Sangomas. I began painting the music of a variety of bands and upon meeting a duo’ BlkSonshine’, started travelling and painting their acoustic nu folk music live on stages throughout Gauteng and other neighbouring towns. A musician myself, (a vocalist and percussionist), I have from time to time been able to compose, perform and if not doing so, paint the music I feel inside and that witch I gather from sources other mine self. ‘Jazz, World Music, Trance, Experimental and Afro Jazz.’ I spent endless time in my studio working at the art of making music and the music of making art. The concept has developed into me being invited to paint live documenting proceedings of prestigious arty functions, corporate events and performances. My chapter will explore the possibilities of music as one of the most powerful subject matter for developing very interesting and influential work of art I am involved with visual artists, poets, musicians, writers and dancers from various creative backgrounds as sources of inspiration for my work.. "

"Mikey was excellent. I would highly recommend him to everyone to come along to their party. The pictures were so true to life, whilst being very funny. He was highly adaptable and happy to do pictures of couples together if they wanted too - and a dog was even allowed in one! :)"

"Kathy is amazing! OMG! Kathy was just phenomenal! I booked her for 2 hours...she ended up staying about 1.5 hrs longer because she was so busy! I don't think she ever stopped! She was quick and everyone wanted a caricature drawing! I will definitely hire her again! Thanks Kathy!!!"

"Rob was fantastic at our wedding. He was great with communication beforehand and was flexible with timings. We absolutely loved our portrait that we received prior to the wedding - although my husband didn’t see this until the wedding day so as not to spoilt any details of my dress. All our guests loved Rob’s pictures and they were very realistic. There was a queue forming at one stage as they became very popular! I also found Rob to be very friendly throughout and would definitely recommend him. "

"Paul was lovely, we had a chat during the week leading up to the event to discuss what we wanted. He was punctual and polite during the evening. I think those that had caricatures done were happy with the results. Indeed my daughter and son-in-law ,whose wedding it was, loved theirs. I would recommend Paul for his talent in portraying the fun side of person on paper."

"Rob was just amazing!! It was one of the best decisions that we made for our wedding having him there. Our guests just loved him. He had a constant queue the whole time he was with us. We absolutely loved our colour portrait. It was hilarious but just perfect. We would definitely recommend Rob for any type of event. He was worth every single penny. Yesterday I got fed both spiritually and materially at Soweto’s Just Badela eatery when I attended a heart-warming joint jazz presentation by Just Badela & ‘EXPRESSIONS by Siphiwe Mhlambi’ – the latter is an event series that capture the soul of jazz through Mhlambi’s evocative photography that blends rhythm and emotion into his every frame. I can right now without any whiff of doubt declare that the event lived up to its brand promise of delivering “an unforgettable afternoon with the legendary Herbie Tsoaeli, the master of double bass and a pioneer in South African jazz” to a full-house sit-down audience. (Indeed I) experience(d) the soul-stirring melodies and rich rhythms that have captured audiences around the world.” Nico Phooko was drawing inspiration from the music and the soul-caressing ambience by live painting a piece that will become a new addition to his “Notes & Strokes” series. The MC was Ngwako Malakalaka from Kofifi FM. We had the opportunity to witness Mhlambi autographing copies of our recently published book, “Rhythms in Black & White: A Virtual Journey Through the World of Jazz”, to happy revellers. Another illustrious author/publisher, Sam Mathe, manned a table selling his book too, “From Kippie to Kippies And Beyond”, on whose pages live our musicians. We do appreciate the platform that Just Badela provides to independent publishing and art . "
