A singer with an acoustic guitar suits a function room, a marquee or a back bar without any extra equipment, while larger halls and outdoor stages need a bigger PA and sometimes a second musician to fill the space.
Ask what the venue provides before you book. Some rooms have a house PA the artist can plug into, others have a sound limiter that cuts the power if the volume goes over a set level, which matters more with a full backing track than with a voice and guitar. A solo performer needs a couple of square metres, a power socket within reach and around 30 to 45 minutes to set up and soundcheck. Check parking and the load-in route as well, since a guitar, a PA and speaker stands take two or three trips from the car.
Most artists send a song list once a booking is confirmed and will build the running order around it. If you want a particular song for a first dance, a birthday or an anniversary, allow three or four weeks so it can be learned and rehearsed properly; some charge a small preparation fee for anything well outside their usual repertoire.
