I'm a professional. If the party doesn't stop, neither do I.
The High Hash Unlimited afterparty for Token2049 at Sofitel Sentosa's So Spa Villa ('Secret Mansion Party'). At the highlight of the night, there was an entry line all the way to the next traffic junction of cars waiting to drop off party-goers, many of whom climbed the walls of the villa to enter the party
I seriously respect a good afterparty. It takes some serious planning and creative directing to be able to take an event (be it finance, tech or other) that starts simple without any music or dancing and to lead people to a state of mind where they're grooving, chilling and still fulfilling the purpose of the event: to connect over their shared interest and experiences while making new experiences
Before I event started 'gigging' as a full-fledged DJ, I was originally musically trained in the St. Patrick's School Military Band. I'm proud of my classical background, and the songs I've performed informed and lead my taste in all genres of music. Years later I would graduate from Beats Boutique DJ School and received a once-in-a-lifetime chance to fill in for DJ Nicole Chen at "The Bijoux Lounge Launch Party", my first ever gig
I frankly love a lot of artists, but the ones who've impacted me, my taste and my style the most would be Wolfgang Mozart (for musical complexity), Pyotr Tchaikovsky (for beauty and harmonization), Boris Brejcha (for ambience & simplicity), Skrillex (for scratch technique) and CC Sound Factory (for punk and indie-pop). I know it's a very strange line-up of artists, but it's because while I was a classically trained musician, our conductor would often choose classical renditions of well-known pop songs. At a very early age I learned to listen and appreciate a wide variety of tastes, thus I learn the skills and respect creative genius of a wide range of musicians. That's how I find ways to tailor my set to every crowd, and how I always know when to introduce a new track, and new style they've never heard before.
The greatest song ever still remains to be House of the Rising Sun. Can't beat a country folk classic
I always arrive early to set up and conduct a soundcheck (between 1-2 hours depending on time constraints and set-up time). As soon as the sound check is successful and the audio is clean, if the crowd has arrived, I just immediately start playing. I stop when the party stops. I DJ for the love of it, I love music and I love my work.
I'm quite used to performing outdoors. My first residency was an outdoors situation, so I'm quite used to the heat. All I ask for is shade so the equipment does not overheat and to protect against rain, maybe a fan in the tropics (again, so no overheating), a nearby power socket and a lengthy enough audio cable for the speaker arrangement
Yes. I only ask that they send a list of their songs ahead of time so that on the off chance I don't have it on hand, I can practice and plan it into my set
Professional, impressive, smooth and one time "absolutely amazing!" during a New Year's Eve Party. I do my best to give the crowd what they want, and to lead their collective vibe to songs that make sense and catch their attention
