Technical Info

What are your basic technical requirements?

I can operate entirely wirelessly and use battery power. I require a performance space of 1mx1m plus space for my wireless speaker to stand a few metres away to avoid feedback. My speaker is 14inches x 14inches.

What information do you require about a venue?

I need to know any directions that will help me find the venue.

Do you provide sound and lighting equipment?

I bring my own sound equipment including my mic and speaker, and a receiver that plugs into the DJ decks.

Can you provide a Spotify/DJ service before and between your sets?

I can provide a Spotify playlist service before, during or after my sets at an additional fee.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best gig you've ever done and the best venue you've ever worked at?

I played at the Ritz for a wedding. It was great to play at such a special venue in London.

What's your favourite type of event?

I enjoy playing at weddings because everybody is so buzzy but I also enjoy the professional aspects of corporate events too.

What's your previous experience and how did you start gigging?

I graduated with a BMUS degree (hons) from Royal Holloway, University of London in 2012. I'm an accomplished clarinettist and saxophonist, in both Classical and Jazz, as well as Swing, Pop and Funk. I'm very well-versed in both sight reading and improvisation. I represented my country in the National Youth Wind Orchestra of Great Britain at the tender age of 17, and have been playing professionally for the last 10 years at a variety of functions, including weddings and corporate events. I most recently opened for a very highly-regarded cooking business, @tarasvegantreats. I would like to continue my work in bringing venues to life through first-class performances as part of function bands, as well as in my solo background music, and DJ Sax performances where I perform alongside your pre-booked DJ.

Which artists have you been most influenced by, who is your favourite artist and what is the greatest song of all time?

My saxophone influences include the luscious, velvety sounds of Ben Webster as well as the emphatic pro sounds of Michael Brecker and David Sanborn.

Performance Info

What are your typical setup and performance times?

Background music - I usually arrive about 1 hour before my performance so that I can set up my equipment and do a sound check. Usually 2x45min sets across 2 hours, and background music in between sets can be arranged. I usually play for 30 minutes for wedding ceremonies, including guest arrival, bridal entrance, signing of the register and exit.

Upbeat Party Sax - I usually arrive about 30 minutes before my performance. Roughly 3x30min sets across 2 hours, but these sets are not set in stone as I often jump on and off the sax throughout the entire 2 hours.

All these times can be adjusted to suit your needs.

Are you happy to perform outside?

I am happy to perform anywhere. For outdoor performances, I require shade if it's really sunny, and cover if it's raining.

Do the clients have a say in what you play or is it a set repertoire list only?

Yes, you can be as much or as little involved in song selection as you like. You can handpick each individual song from my setlist and can choose other songs too if you wish. Or you can just give me a genre that you would like and leave the rest to me. Or if you're really not sure what music you would like, then we can have a call and I can suggest what genres and song selection usually work for your particular event.

How do previous clients most commonly describe your performances?

St. Margaret's House, Bethnal Green, London
Thanks for playing at my supper club event in London. Your saxophone playing transformed the evening. The dinner guests were complimenting you throughout the night, and you really set an enjoyable tone for the evening and I love the way you had a diverse setlist for me to choose from in advance. Thank you Gemma, will definitely be booking again!

Stanton Community Village Hall, Suffolk
Gemma played a lively, hour long welcoming set as people were arriving for Stanton's VE Day afternoon celebrations. She was dressed in a smart, 1940s uniform and delivered a series of well researched, familiar songs from the era with gusto and aplomb, transporting us back in time. Her performance certainly set the mood for the afternoon, enabling the audience to enjoy these well-known songs on an alto sax and clarinet - each instrument chosen to best suit the song. Beautiful, well rehearsed melodies played by an accomplished, musician.
