About / Biography

Harmonica Lewinsky is a cockney sing-along entertainer.

He can get the whole venue singing along, which is a rare treat. Perfect for St George’s Day celebrations, themed cockney nights, such as a Pie & mash evening, King’s Birthday, Lord Mayor’s Show, Remembrance celebrations, VE Day and other military commemorations and so on. This act is perfect for festivals, he’s a one off, something a bit different, so he provides much needed variety in a roster of acts.

Lewinsky is steeped in the cockney tradition, one of a dying breed - after all, he’s a cockney Sparrow from Harrow, and he has a huge repertoire of cockney songs, Chas & Dave, musichall, Harry Champion, Wartime songs, George Formby, Bernard Cribbins, plus loads of comedy songs, rock & roll, Elvis, 50’s, 60’s, 70’s and 80’s, country, Irish, TV theme tunes, Cowboy songs and so on. He can mix it up.

He performs solo, duo or with a band. If you require a bigger sound, though playing guitar, harmonica and singing, he makes a pretty full sound on his own.

He has a sing-along booklet so folks can join in on all the classics. You are guaranteed a great night of sing-along good cheer.

He welcomes requests, likes to get folks up to sing a song and is happy to accompany them. He’s got a dry stage persona, full of off the cuff remarks, and just loves to interact with an audience.

Very professional, got great gear and is happy to discuss repertoire with the publican or client.

Review of a corporate gig:

'We booked Harmonica Lewinsky to celebrate a colleague's first anniversary, and it was a fantastic choice! Phil is incredibly talented, playing a variety of classic Cockney tunes. His wit and humour brought the performance to life, and by the third song, the whole team was joining in and singing along. Everyone loved it - great, lighthearted fun. thanks mate!'

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best gig you've ever done and the best venue you've ever worked at?

I performed annually at a pub in Farringdon for the Lord Mayor's Show, the pub was packed, everyone was singing along to their favourite cockney and Chas & Dave songs.

What's your favourite type of event?

I/we love playing at all sorts of events: festivals, Remembrance Sunday, St George's Day (of course), King's Birthday, D Day Celebrations and so on. I have played for several funerals, which have been memorable occasions, despite the sad reason for the booking, people tend to really get involved in the music, it's actually an honour to play on these occasions.

What's your previous experience and how did you start gigging?

I have always played guitar and harmonica since I was 10, I started gigging in college. I had a layoff for 20 years while I pursued my non-musical career, but got back into it at a weekly country music jam and gradually built my repertoire and style. I now perform with excellent musicians or solo.

Which artists have you been most influenced by, who is your favourite artist and what is the greatest song of all time?

Chas & Dave have influenced me, obviously, but before them, Harry Champion and all the top cockney/musical performers such as George Formby. From a singing viewpoint, I learnt a lot from Elvis, Sinatra and, don't laugh, Bob Dylan - all 3 of them have incredible phrasing - when to stretch the lyric out, when to bunch a phrase into a small space. My favourite band is Steely Dan. The Beatles weren't too shabby, were they?

Performance Info

What are your typical setup and performance times?

I usually arrive an hour before performance time, or an hour and a half if it is with my band. Normal set times are 2 x 1 hour. I'm happy to play more or less, I have a very large repertoire, not just of cockney songs but Elvis, rock & roll, country, Irish, comedy songs, cowboy songs and lots more.

Are you happy to perform outside?

I'm happy to play outside, weather and weather-proof arrangements permitting, provided there is a power supply close to the performance area.

Do the clients have a say in what you play or is it a set repertoire list only?

I am happy to discuss repertoire within reason and may be able to learn a specific song before the event, depending on the time available. Unlike a lot of performers, I commit the lyrics to each song to memory, I am not reading the lyrics from a tablet, I am performing them!

How do previous clients most commonly describe your performances?

Previous clients describe me as highly entertaining, extremely funny and talented. 'Who am I to disagree?' as someone once sang...

Do you have a large repertoire of cockney/Chas & Dave music? Do you do other music?

I have a massive repertoire of cockney singalong classics, lesser known cockney songs, musichall, George Formby, Bernard Cribbins, comedy songs, saucy songs (if required), one song to the tune of another, football songs, cowboy songs and so on. You may be familiar with the choruses, but unlike most cockney performers, i know the verses as well! And they are often hilarious, droll, beautiful and full of pathos.
However, I also have a large repertoire of rock & roll, pop/rock from the 50's to the 80's, loads of country (i have a separate country and western swing band), some folk, blues and jazz standards. So I can deliver a long pure cockney night or a whole mixture of all sorts of music. I can tailor to your requirements
