About / Biography

Pipe major Nick MacVicar is the Scottish piper in Italy. He has been playing and teaching the great Highland bagpipe for over 30 years. He grew up and received his first musical education as a boy in the 80s and early 90s on the Isle of Skye. Besides being a professional piper, he is a multi- instrumentalist and plays flutes, accordion and piano. Nick lives in Italy now, where he takes active part in many Scottish events that take place there. He is the pipe major of the Royal Highland Company pipes & drums, a Scottish pipe band in Tuscany, and the president of the Scottish Highland Society of Italy. He is also the artistic director of Ceilitaly, the first and only ceilidh band in southern Europe. Apart from this Nick is much in demand as a ceilidh dance instructor and celebrant at Scottish weddings in Italy.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best gig you've ever done and the best venue you've ever worked at?

I played at Rod Stewart's Italian wedding and in the Vatican. Great fun, and a bit tricky to avoid waking up a Pope during his siesta when you play bagpipes in the square outside his bedroom

What's your favourite type of event?

Weddings and, I kid you not, funerals. The first because I am a romantic, the second because I strongly believe a last farewell should be a dignified one.

What's your previous experience and how did you start gigging?

I started playing at age 10 on the Isle of Skye, busking for the tourists at age 14 and gigging around Europe at 18

Which artists have you been most influenced by, who is your favourite artist and what is the greatest song of all time?

Fellow pipers mostly. The champions of course, but also my old pipe major and people like Carlos Nunez from Spain

Are you Scottish?

Yes, I grew up on the Isle of Skye in the 1980s

Performance Info

What are your typical setup and performance times?

10 minutes to tune the pipes, and I always arrive fully dressed

Are you happy to perform outside?

No problem at all, actually better

Do the clients have a say in what you play or is it a set repertoire list only?

Clients have a choice from an 800+ repertoire and I am open to requests.

How do previous clients most commonly describe your performances?

Most reviews mention my skill on the bagpipe as well as my cheerful and friendly attitude
