About / Biography

I'm Ray Solo, and for more than 40 years I've been fortunate enough to make music my life. Along the way I've performed rock, blues, country, jazz, and everything in between, entertaining audiences in pubs, clubs, restaurants, festivals, aged care centres, and special events.

Music has also taken me around the world—from playing traditional music in Austria, to entertaining guests at tropical resorts in the beautiful Whitsundays, and performing in a variety of venues across Australia and overseas.

Over those years I've developed hundreds of professionalbacking tracks, learned plenty of tricks to make life easier for working musicians, and discovered what really works in front of a live audience.

I ususally work solo with my self-authored custom performance tracks, that give me quite an edge on other performers as I am able to engage audiences with songs they know, but delivered differently. The set-up also allows me to deliver a full-sound-like a 4 piece band, but at a solo fee, utilizing a small space.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best gig you've ever done and the best venue you've ever worked at?

With a long background in entertainment, I have worked both as a solo and as part of a band at a huge variety of events. Probably my most memorable was at a "Tet" public event on the beach at Nha Trang in Vietnam where there was an estimated audience of 10,000. Electric. I also love doing small intimate sing along events for senior citizens- to see their faces light up as they recall the music of their youth is priceless.

What's your favourite type of event?

As I get older, playing smaller events with my "Sentimental Journey" concerts for senior citizens becomes more and more satisfying. I get a real buzz out of seeing these people come to life as they recall the songs of their younger days, and their comments prove that I have made a difference to their lives.

What's your previous experience and how did you start gigging?

I started gigging at age 14-that was a very long time ago, and have never stopped. I will stop when I play the last song at my funeral. I have worked in Australia as a band member, and have backed several well-known artists, as well as integrated with a variety of bands, including traditional bands in Austria, rock bands in Vietnam, and country bands in Australia.

Which artists have you been most influenced by, who is your favourite artist and what is the greatest song of all time?

I am influenced by all music styles, and take something from most styles. With a prepared set list of over 400 songs, I usually tailor my performance to suit the venue, and the vibe of the audience attending. That could range from simple country to jazz, blues or rock.

Where do you perform?

Where do you perform?
Based in Toowoomba, Queensland, Ray regularly performs throughout South East Queensland and is available to travel further by arrangement.

Can you tailor the music to our audience?

Absolutely. Every performance is adapted to suit the audience, whether that's relaxed background music, classic country favourites, rock and roll, Beatles hits or interactive sing-alongs.

Why are your aged care concerts different?

Ray specialises in interactive performances designed to encourage singing, reminiscing and participation. The focus is on bringing back happy memories through familiar songs.

Why should I choose "Ray Solo"?

After many years performing in bands, I discovered I could deliver the full sound of a band while working as a solo entertainer using professionally produced backing tracks. The result was more flexibility, lower costs for clients, and the same great music. "Ray Solo" was born—and after thousands of performances, it's a name that has become synonymous with quality live entertainment.

Performance Info

What are your typical setup and performance times?

Depending on the venue, I like to arrive and start set up at least 1 hour before down-beat. This varies with the venue. I usually perform 45 minutes with a 15 minute break between, but for shorter times, I will play for an hour or more with no breaks. I hate "dead air" so arrange my sets so that the time from the end of one song to the start of the next is only about 15 seconds. This supplies a continuous performance.

Are you happy to perform outside?

I am OK to perform outside (under cover), and for smaller events can use battery powered equipment. I can also supply a "Roving Musician" show where I utilize a self powered amplifier with an Aeroband Guitar. No electricity needed.

Do the clients have a say in what you play or is it a set repertoire list only?

Reasonably flexible about what I play. I usually scope out the crowd, and what they like and adapt accordingly. I usually play the styles needed, and can often accommodate specific request.

How do previous clients most commonly describe your performances?

Amazingly adaptable. Great voice. (I was referred to in Austria as "Superstimme") (Superb Voice). Friendly and approachable. Full sound- Solo fee. My voice has been described as smooth, flexible and perfect for ballads.
