About / Biography

The Man in Black Group brings you the highlights of the vast career of the greatest country singer ever in just over 25 songs, including about 10 duets Johnny Cash/June Carter. All performed true to the roots of country, but with the energy and power of rock'n roll.

The deep, resonant voice of singer/guitarist Geert Bouckaert sounds very similar to that of Cash, but he adds his personal touch to every song. Also singer Yanina Van Steenbrugghe performs June Carter's vocals in her own unique way. Even more powerful and soulful.

Guitarist Lajos Tauber’s telecaster takes care of that typical ‘boom chicka boom’- sound, but he also enriches Cash's songs with more rock and bluesy sounds. Double bass player Karel Algoed and drummer Tom Voet add the vibe of rockabilly.

In between the songs, Geert Bouckaert shares funny facts and anecdotes from the turbulent life of Johnny Cash with the audience, which adds an extra dimension to the show. Timeless entertainment for all ages.

Technical Info

What are your basic technical requirements?

We need a performance space of at least 3 x 4 meters (solo, duo and trio) and 6 meters x 4meters for the full band. We require at least one 220 v power socket and 3 parking spaces (band), 1 or 2 for trio.

What information do you require about a venue?

We need to know any directions that will help us find the venue and find the right place to load in and out our equipment.

Do you provide sound and lighting equipment?

We can bring our own limited PA system (up to an audience of 200 people) at an extra cost. We can't provide any lighting.

Can you provide a Spotify/DJ service before and between your sets?

We’re happy to play music from Spotify before, after and between our sets.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best gig you've ever done and the best venue you've ever worked at?

We played for 5000 people on a big stage at the Gent Festival. That's was probably our best experience so far.

What's your favourite type of event?

We love playing at all sorts of events but prefer theatres , because the audience is very attentive. On the other hand in theatres there's not much room for dancing, therefor bars and pubs are a lot of fun too! The best audience is an festival audience.

What's your previous experience and how did you start gigging?

I've been gigging for almost 30 years with various bands on various instruments and I've been doing Johnny Cash for almost 10 years (includinh the pandemic). For the last three years I found the best band members ever. Very skilled and motivated musicians.

Which artists have you been most influenced by, who is your favourite artist and what is the greatest song of all time?

Johnny Cash of course. And my favourite is Ring of Fire, written by June Carter, a favourite of may people and always a crowd pleaser. It's the moment early on in our set where we get everybody to sing along.

Performance Info

What are your typical setup and performance times?

We normally arrive about 2 hours before the performance to set up and soundcheck and eat. We normally perform 2 x 45 minutes or1 set of 90 minutes (+extra's) Most of the time we end playin about 2 hours. We’re happy to play a bit longer or shorter but we’ve found that these set times suit us and our audiences best.

Are you happy to perform outside?

We’re happy to play outside, as long as the stage is covered. You never know when i'ts gonna rain. If there's no stage we require a flat level surface and a power supply close to the performance area.

Do the clients have a say in what you play or is it a set repertoire list only?

We play a set repertoire list. The full repertoire consist of about 40 songs of which we we play 26 tot 28. The clients are welcome to pick 25 songs from the 40 songs list or require to include certain songs. (Or a shorter list of favourites from the 40 songs list for shorter gigs.)

How do previous clients most commonly describe your performances?

Previous clients have described us as 'strikingly authentic', 'a fresh yet faithful interpretation, 'better than Joaquin Phoenix', 'powerful and energetic', 'they don’t just play Johnny Cash—they embody him.'

Does the band require a meal and drinks?

Yes, we require a free hot meal and 5 free drinks (max) for every musician as well as tap water on stage during the performance.
