A guide to booking

Hire Jazz Bands in Illinois, United States

Live jazz groups bring a polished, adaptable sound to weddings and events near you. These professional musicians handle everything from soft background music during dinner to high-energy dance sets, adjusting their repertoire and volume to suit your venue and occasion. Most jazz acts offer flexible lineup sizes, so a trio that plays your cocktail hour can expand to a quintet or larger group for the evening.

Choosing a Jazz Band for Your Event

The most popular format is a three or four-piece jazz group for wedding receptions and corporate functions, with a classic combination of piano or guitar, bass, drums and sometimes saxophone or vocals. Smaller duos work well for ceremonies and intimate settings, while larger ensembles with brass and dedicated vocalists suit bigger venues and dance-focused events. Many jazz musicians locally also offer themed sets, including 1920s Gatsby-era jazz, bossa nova, and modern pop songs rearranged in a swing style.

Jazz Band Pricing in Illinois

Jazz bands in Illinois currently range from $180 for smaller ensembles to $2,250+ for larger groups or extended performances, with an average booking cost of $650. Price typically reflects the number of musicians, set length, travel requirements, and any custom arrangements. Trios and quartets offer good value for most events, while full big band setups command a higher fee but deliver a richer, more dynamic sound.

Photo of Big City Dixieland Band Big City Dixieland Band "Big City Dixieland was a HUGE hit in our City Parade! Audiences from all ages were singing along, clapping and even dancing in the grass! Big City Dixieland sounded great! From what we (the organizers) could hear, they played a good variety of lively, well-known Dixieland Music, including a patriotic song. It was very easy to work with Maureen and Michael, their band arrived early, and everyone was very professional. We will definitely be hiring Big City Dixieland band for our next event in 2025!" Thank you guys so much, we had such a wonderful time and were so happy and impressed with the music. With everything going on, there were 2 things about the wedding that made it stand out: the food and the band. Our guests loved the music and it was everything that we could have ever wanted and more. I really meant what I said about how cool it is that you all play this music and hopefully more people my age appreciate the work that you all do. Please let me know if there is anything I can do for you. We visit Chicago pretty often so we'll keep tabs on when you play and will come say hello sometime soon. Hope you have a happy Thanksgiving! -Ryan & Angela" Based in Chicago, Illinois Ryan Moorman - Private Wedding Photo of Rhythm Rockets Rhythm Rockets "It’s quite possible to stroll right past the place while navigating West Kinzie Street, just a wee bit north of the Chicago River, and not even realize it. The only concrete clue that you’ve arrived at your destination is the sight of a black canvas entrance emblazoned with the curious moniker of the joint. It’s called Untitled, and that handle is purposely nondescript, only adding to the overall mystique of the nightspot. Head down a short flight of stairs, say hello to the doorman (there’s no cover), and you’ll find that Untitled offers a welcoming hideaway from the hustle and bustle of the Loop, which sits only a few blocks south on the other side of the river. During the Prohibition era, speakeasies dotted the Windy City landscape where those so inclined could quaff an alcoholic libation or two while securely hidden away from the long arm of the law. But those long-ago speaks were never this spacious or glamorously appointed. Make no mistake: this is a classy operation all the way, so you won’t spy any tennis shoes or sweatsuits sullying the polished dance floor. When the Rhythm Rockets take the stage at Untitled, as they’ve been doing on the second Wednesday evening of every month for a while now starting at 7:30 p.m. and going strong for three hours, the joint proceeds to jump to a barrage of eminently danceable rhythms. The music meshes perfectly with the delicious food and cool drinks that can be ordered by summoning your lovely waitress. You can dine on such delicacies as steak tartare, sea scallops, and mushroom tortellini, and top your feast off with a scrumptious slice of whoopee pie, a blend of dark chocolate-espresso cake, peanut butter mousse, and powdered sugar. There was a fair amount of dancing happening during the Rhythm Rockets’ most recent Untitled engagement, but most of the sizable crowd was content to soak in the swinging soiree at their tables or from their barstools. The sound quality was exceptionally crisp and full-bodied all night long; Dave Downer’s concise guitar licks sliced through the air with authority, and Nicole Kestler’s delightful vocals were mixed at precisely the right level for maximum enjoyment as she sailed through longtime Rhythm Rockets favorites that included Little Esther’s “Oo Papa Do,” the relaxed pre-war blues lament “Trouble In Mind,” and the band’s scorching arrangement of Ruth Brown’s “(Mama) He Treats Your Daughter Mean” that they often use as a set closer. The sizzling sax section (tenors Michael Bielecki and Vince Salerno and baritone Justin Kierans) was tight and right throughout the evening, and the rock-solid combination of bassist Lou Marini and drummer Mark Fornek kept the grooves hitting on all cylinders. Mark usually sings a song or two on each set prior to Nicole’s entrance, and now he’s previewing a few Chicago blues numbers that he’s also singing with Dave’s new side band, the Five Alibis. Vince switched over to harmonica to give Little Walter’s ominous “I Don’t Play” an authentic Chicago blues sound, although the horns returned when Mark launched into Junior Wells’ playful shuffle “The Things I’d Do For You.” If you’re anywhere near River North on the second Wednesday of this or any month in the near future, take a walk down Kinzie and seek out Untitled, even if you have to look hard for it. It’s altogether worth the effort--and a great place to check out the Rhythm Rockets doing what they do best!" Based in Chicago, Illinois Bill Dahl - Public Show Photo of D'AYCH and The Next Level Band D'AYCH and The Next Level Band "Used these guys for my event in September of 2023. I can always tell things are going to go well when the communication is clear. We were able to get exactly what we needed for both days of our two day event. The first day we wanted classic rock and/or light rap for the festivities to get the crowd amped up. People were walking around the fest jamming while shopping/eating, which is what we wanted. The second day we needed something far more subtle while dinner was served to our sponsors and guests. D'aych and The Next Level Band brought the old school JAZZ BAND sound. Wow! We were originally going to go with 2 different bands but D'aych assured me that they could handle it all. THEY ABSOLUTELY DID. The best parts: 1. On both days they dressed for the theme of our event!! 2. They arrived EARLY and I always say EARLY is on time! 3. They were professional 4. They did exactly what they were hired to do on both days... seamlessly Definitely my go to band now and will use them at our event in 2024 as well. Thanks guys!" You all did a phenomenal job with every detail. You were all professional, had amazing energy and extremely talented! You guys made the night perfect! I will definitely recommend your band in the future." Smith and can’t recommend him highly enough. He is a phenomenal R&B and Smooth Soul Jazz artist who brings incredible energy to every stage he steps on. Whether opening for a major national act or performing at a community event, Benny J. has a unique ability to connect with the audience and keep them fully engaged from start to finish. Beyond his talent as a BMI recording artist and singer/songwriter, he is a consummate professional, punctual, reliable, and joyful to collaborate with on production. Many jazz bands are skilled at adjusting their volume and energy to suit different parts of an event. They can provide subtle background music during dinner and then shift to a more upbeat, danceable set for the evening party. It is a good idea to discuss the event flow with the band so they can plan their sets accordingly.

Most jazz bands are self-contained and bring their own amplification for smaller to mid-sized venues. Acoustic jazz groups may not need any amplification at all for intimate settings. For larger venues, additional PA equipment may be required. It is worth discussing sound requirements with the band before booking.
