Atlantic Street Band is an Adelaide roving jazz band playing New Orleans-style jazz and swing. For more than a decade we've performed at over 250 events across South Australia, including Adelaide Oval, the Adelaide Convention Centre, Adelaide Airport, Adelaide Fringe, Adelaide Central Market and the Bay to Birdwood.
What sets us apart is that we roam. Instead of staying fixed on a stage, we move through the crowd, play to guests up close and bring a room to life. It works especially well for corporate events and activations, council and community events, festivals, markets, conferences, weddings and private functions.
Our lineups are flexible:
Our acoustic sets need no power or PA, so we can play almost anywhere, indoors or out. Where a room needs more volume, we can also add a PA and electric piano.
The music runs from lively street-parade tunes through to relaxed dinner jazz, and at Christmas we can weave in festive carols.
You deal directly with the musicians who'll be performing. We're easy to work with, we arrive on time, and we're happy to tailor the music to your event. Tell us the date, venue and style you have in mind and we'll suggest the right lineup.

Our most common lineup is completely acoustic and mobile, and it needs no production at all. No power, no PA and no stage, so we can play almost anywhere, indoors or out, and roam through your guests. A little shade or shelter is helpful for outdoor events, and we'd appreciate parking for a few vehicles close to the venue. If you'd like a staged or amplified set, we can bring a PA and electric piano (see below), and we'd then need access to a power point and a space of about 3 x 3 metres.
An indication of the room or site size and the number of guests is helpful, plus whether the event is indoors or outdoors. Please let us know the start time, how long you'd like us to play, and whether guests will be seated or mingling. We'd also like to know where to park and unload, the best entry point, and the contact on the day. If a PA is wanted, we'd need to know about power and any sound limiter. For roving sets, it helps to know if there are areas where we shouldn't walk through, or any speeches and moments we should play around.
Our most common lineup is fully acoustic and needs no sound equipment. We use a megaphone to amplify vocals, which suits the New Orleans sound. If you'd like a staged, amplified set, we can provide a PA system and electric piano on request, for an additional fee. We don't provide lighting, but we're happy to work with your venue's lighting or your production team.
Yes, on request. When we bring a PA we're happy to play music from Spotify before, after and between our sets, and we can choose the music ourselves or follow a playlist or style you prefer. This is usually offered as part of a PA package for an additional fee. For our acoustic roving sets we don't use backing music, as we keep moving through the crowd and play live throughout.
Playing the RAA Bay to Birdwood vintage car run five years running is an annual highlight. We start among the cars at the start line, then play our way through the crowds at the finish in Birdwood. Other favourite venues include Elder Park for the Family Fireworks on NYE.
Our favourite events are ones where guests are having fun and enjoying themselves. We love playing acoustically and relocating ourselves within the crowd, so we can chat with people and create connections with the audience.
We started out busking, then began getting gigs, which grew into large festival bookings, corporate events and council events. Over more than a decade we've performed at over 250 events across South Australia.
Louis Armstrong and Fats Waller are strong influences on our style and repertoire choices. Louis Armstrong is a favourite: his playing and showmanship are what we try to bring to the street. The greatest song of all time is a tough one, but When You're Smiling and On the Sunny Side of the Street are two of our favourites, and both are closely associated with Louis Armstrong. They're lively, instantly recognisable and always bring a smile to the crowd.
For acoustic performances we arrive half an hour before kick-off, which gives us plenty of time to be on standby and ready to start. For amplified events we arrive earlier to set up and sound check, so the time depends on the size of the setup. Two hours made up of two 45 minute sets is ideal, but we can play anywhere from one to four hours, with a 45 minute set for every hour booked. For a single hour we're happy to play the whole hour.
Yes, we really enjoy outdoor performances. Our acoustic lineup needs no power or PA, so we can play almost anywhere and roam through the crowd. A bit of shade is always welcome on a hot day, and a sheltered spot is helpful if there's wind or rain.
We can try to accommodate a song request or two for each booking, especially for weddings, or if there's a particular song relevant to a corporate event. We have some great memories of adapting songs from other genres into Dixieland arrangements when we've been given requests. Most clients leave it to us to choose songs from our repertoire that suit the mood of the guests, and we have a lot of experience reading the room.
Previous clients always comment on our professionalism, and on the fact that we're all clearly having a ball making music and entertaining the crowd together. We keep things fresh, and there's a large degree of improvisation, which keeps it interesting for everyone, including us.
