About / Biography

The internationally renowned pianist, composer and bandmaster, Jesper Hedegaard, who won the Troféu Caymmi Bahia prize in Salvador Brazil, is back in Denmark with a new crew after 3 years in Portugal.

Discover what a lifetime's immersion in Brazilian music has meant for a pianist who chose to bet everything when, at the age of 24, he traveled to the land of Samba and Bossa Nova. Plans have been made for a unique concert that draws the audience into the sensuality and sound of Brazil. The audience can look forward to excellent Brazilian Instrumental Music (MIB) that both surprises and excites. Sound of Brasil 5 appeals widely to both Jazz and World audiences.

Jesper Hedegaard Sound of Brasil has played a large number of concerts in Portugal, Brazil and Denmark with different crews. Now with leading Danish soloist in the front - Alexander Kraglund as well as 2 exceptional Brazilians in the rhythm group - Rômulo Duarte and Zezinho Gotelipe.

The repertoire includes compositions by Brazil's great masters such as Antonio Carlos Jobim, Hermeto Pascoal, Arismar do Espírito Santo, Adriano Giffoni as well as compositions by Jesper Hedegaard. The concert moves over rhythms such as Samba, Choro, Baião and Samba-canção.

In Denmark, Sound of Brasil has performed for enthusiastic audiences at Portalen in Greve, Giant Steps in Svendborg, Lyngby Stadsbibliotek, Paradise Jazz i Huset, Gentofte Hovedbibliotek, Jazzselskabet in Aarhus, Lyngby-Taabæk Jazzklub, Hornbæk Jazzklub, Værket in Randers, The piano factory in Hillerød, the Ministry in Ebeltoft, the Krudttønden on Østerbro, Kulturhuset Islands Brygge and Tranquebar in Copenhagen.

MIB, also called Brazilian Jazz, is a distilled and summarized expression of prominent aspects of the Brazilian musical tradition to which Sound of Brasil devotes itself. Since the 60s, MIB has undergone significant development and is today one of the most exciting forms of musical expression in Brazil, because it contains improvisation, extended chords and beautiful melodies.

About the orchestra

Alexander Kraglund – violin, viola and harmonica – with his undeniable authenticity and his captivating playing, Alexander has thrilled audiences at home and abroad since he graduated from the Rhythmic Music Conservatory in Copenhagen in 2011. Since then, he has performed with a large number of Brazil's top instrumentalists, including choir guitarist and composer Rogerio Souza, bassist Rômulo Duarte and singer Thaís Motta. Jesper Hedegaard – pianist, composer and bandmaster – has specialized in Brazilian music since 1976 and has lived and performed in Brazil for 12 years, where he has played with a number of Brazil's top musicians such as Celso de Almeida, Paulinho Trompete, Marcelo Martins, Rômulo Duarte and many others. In Denmark, Jesper has led the New Brazilian Quartet for 12 years and has performed at Copenhagen Jazzhouse, Vega and Montmartre, among others. In 2012, he released the CD Time to Change, which received an exceptionally fine review from Jens Lohmann in Jazz Special.

Rômulo Duarte (BRA) – bass – is one of Brazil's foremost bassists. With his superb playing, he has been at the very top together with many of Brazil's great masters, such as Gilberto Gil, Milton Nascimento, Caetano Veloso and Hamilton de Holanda. The last 3 years he has lived in Denmark, where he has performed with Thomas Clausen, among others and in the Niels Lan Doky International Jazz Collective.

Zezinho Gotelipe (BRA) – drums – has worked with several artists, such as Ivan Lins, Oswaldo Montenegro, Guilherme Arantes, Sandra Duailibe, Ellen Oléria, Myrlla Muniz, Rênio Quintas. He recorded the CD Eduardo Rangel & Orquestra Filarmônica de Brasília, and later the DVD Choro Sinfônico, with the participation of Hamilton de Holanda, Evandro Barcellos, Célia Porto, Rogério Midlej and Dolores Tomé. He participated as a drummer in the Cláudio Santoro National Theater Symphony Orchestra. He is currently studying for a Masters in Music (Jazz Performance) at the University of Aveiro.
