About / Biography

Playing an original whirlwind style of highly visceral, passionately charged instrumental solo flamenco/funk fusion, Jonjan creates captivating performances on a single acoustic guitar that sound like an entire band. He leaves audiences amazed.

Having performed to George Benson in 2016 (on Sky Art's Guitar Star), on primetime BBC1 in 2017, with the honour of performing in Jimi Hendrix’s former London Mayfair apartment in 2018 and performing for Apple, Google plus being invited to give masterclass sessions at Yamaha’s flagship EU store to name some highlights, Jonjan is no foreigner on any stage, at any venue or in front of any audience.

Commonly described as ‘James Brown meets Rodrigo y Gabriela’, Jonjan combines the athletic skill of percussive techniques with emotive, highly dynamic and groove-based playing – creating a visually enthralling element alongside an atmosphere that gets people moving and pushes an audience’s expectation of what an acoustic guitar can do.

From the streets of Dublin, rooftop parties in Istanbul, the BBC studios in London, sun drenched mansions in Barcelona, grand hotels in India, ancient castletops in the Italian mountains and anything in between, he captivates audiences anywhere he performs with his pure talent, energy and passion.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best gig you've ever done and the best venue you've ever worked at?

The best venue I've played is Jimi Hendrix's bedroom - performed on his bed to audiences in his apartment in London, now a space dedicated to him and his music - it's a huge honour.

The best gig is perhaps an Italian mountaintop castle, which was just absolutely a wild combination of sunset, incredible people, atmosphere, food, energy and location.

What's your favourite type of event?

I love highly intimate 'me in the spotlight' performances but I also really enjoy being the atmosphere for people, families and friends all meeting up and letting their hair down at Wedding receptions - it's a beautiful thing to observe while I'm performing and setting the energy for good conversations!

What's your previous experience and how did you start gigging?

I've been playing for more than 20 years and played for the biggest companies in the world.
I've performed for Apple, Google, the BBC, given masterclasses for Yamaha, played on the London Eye and in the Tate Modern gallery.
I've played for George Benson on Sky Arts Guitar Star and in Jimi Hendrix's apartment. From streets to luxury hotels internationally, no stage is too small, no audience too big.

I started upon hearing Carlos Santana play. But I was brought up hearing lots of music - flamenco, funk, disco, classic rock, video game audio.

Which artists have you been most influenced by, who is your favourite artist and what is the greatest song of all time?

Carlos Santana - Most Influential

Bill Withers - Who Is He And What Is He To You - Greatest Song

Performance Info

What are your typical setup and performance times?

Setup 20min - 40mnin

Are you happy to perform outside?

Yes, if I am protected by UK rain
PLEASE plan for rain - it statistically rains more days than not in this country - and if it doesn't, that's a great bonus!
I can't perform in the rain and let my equipment get damaged.

Do the clients have a say in what you play or is it a set repertoire list only?

A little of both; I have a list of covers I can throw in and a list of my own pieces.
I'm normally hired to play my own pieces - 'do my own thing' - because that's usually the USP, but I am very happy to throw in covers and known tracks in the flamenco-funk percussive style.

How do previous clients most commonly describe your performances?

Phrases like incredible, mind blowing, captivating, athletic, unbeliveable.
I've had someone come up and say no musician has never made her hold her breathe and then release it at points in the same way, and another saying that she has never been as aroused watching a musician, and that I have sexy hands. Which is lovely!

What mood or atmosphere do you create?

I'm able to adapt to what is needed perfectly and especially after 20+yrs playing I can most certainly 'read a room', however I feel I am best used for intimate, energetic moods that will captivate and setting an exciting, unique and completely expectation-breaking atmosphere.

This can be more low key, with people noticing in the periphery of their conversations that you have booked and incredible guitarist and moments of flashyness, or it can be a main-event in the spotlight all-eyes-on-me kind of element.
