Padre Padrone Padre Padrone are synonymous with calypso and Latin jazz in concerts and events

Padre Padrone hat in zwei Jahrzehnten des Zusammenspiels zu einem Repertoire gefunden, das zunehmend eine afro-karibisch-jazzige Schlagseite hat. Der zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts zuerst vorwiegend in Trinidad gespielte Calypso verbreitete sich zuerst in der Karibik. Ende der 50er-Jahre wurde der Stil durch Protagonisten wie Harry Belafonte auch in den USA populär, wo er auch den Jazz beeinflusste. So auch der „Saxofon Colossus“ Sonny Rollins, dessen Eltern von den Jungferninseln stammten und ihm den Calypso mit der Muttermilch einflössten, ließ ihn zu zahlreichen Kompositionen inspirieren. Viele Jazzmusiker:innen haben in der Folge Calypso-Jazz-Tunes komponiert, so etwa Kenny Barron, Tommy Flanagan, Kenny Garrett ua
Dieses stilistische Herzstück wird durch weitere Bossa- und Latinstücke sowie vereinzelt durch ausgewählte jazzige oder soulige Werke ergänzt. Mit größerer Spielfreude erschafft „Padre Padrone“ groovige, subtile und einfühlsame kleine Kunstwerke. Der Anspruch sowohl zu unterhalten als auch herauszufordern spornt sie zu Spontaneität und Interaktion an.

Padre Padrone sind für Konzerte ebenso zu buchen wie für konzertante Einlagen oder musikalische Umrahmungen an Apéros und Festanlässen wie Geburtstags- oder Hochzeitsfesten, Diplomierungen, geschäftlichen Veranstaltungen, Vernissagen, Einweihungen oder Jubiläen. Durch das halbakustische Konzept können Padre Padrone auch ohne Strom spielen (falls Klavier vorhanden) und eignen sich aufgrund der Mobilität auch für Anlässe im Freien.

Obwohl zu den Latin-Stücken immer wieder getanzt wird, möchten wir darauf hinweisen, dass „Padre Padrone“ sich nicht als Standardtanz-Band versteht.

Over two decades of performing together, Padre Padrone have developed a repertoire that increasingly has an Afro-Caribbean-jazz flavour. Calypso, which was first played mainly in Trinidad at the beginning of the 20th century, initially spread throughout the Caribbean. By the late 1950s, the style had also become popular in the US thanks to figures such as Harry Belafonte, where it went on to influence jazz. This was certainly the case for the ‘Saxophone Colossus’, Sonny Rollins, whose parents hailed from the Virgin Islands and who was brought up on calypso from an early age; it inspired him to write numerous compositions. Many jazz musicians have subsequently composed calypso-jazz tunes, including Kenny Barron, Tommy Flanagan, Kenny Garrett and others
This stylistic core is complemented by further bossa nova and Latin pieces, as well as the occasional selected jazz or soul-inspired work. With great enthusiasm, ‘Padre Padrone’ creates groovy, subtle and sensitive little works of art. Their aim to both entertain and challenge spurs them on to spontaneity and interaction.

Padre Padrone are available to book for concerts as well as for concert-style performances or musical entertainment at receptions and celebrations such as birthday parties, weddings, graduation ceremonies, business events, art exhibitions, inaugurations or anniversaries. Thanks to their semi-acoustic set-up, Padre Padrone can perform without a power supply (provided a piano is available) and, due to their mobility, are also well-suited to outdoor events.

Although people often dance to the Latin pieces, we would like to point out that ‘Padre Padrone’ do not see themselves as a standard dance band.
