To roar, seethe and crave are three similar expressions of the Dutch verb RAZEN or to rage. RAAS is a violin-guitar duo that aims to knock you off your feet and surprise you: a classical duo going off on a tangent!
The diversity in the RAAS music scenery is quite simply staggering: you may find classical and contemporary works, music from Spain, Latin America and the Balkan region, as well as tango. Through improvisation and making their own arrangements, they give a twist to existing music.
As connecting with the audience and between themselves are of the essence, RAAS prefers the more intimate venues and plays mostly without sheet music. Moreover, they use sound amplification when playing at open air venues like summer bars, small squares, garden, … You can find them at any sorts of events: from classical music concerts to events like weddings, workshops for children to teambuildings.
RAAS is also a success in international competitions. They won the First and Special prize in de International Strings and Chamber Music competition in November 2021 (Romania) and a first prize in the Premier Music International Competition (Hungary) with their recordings.
Guitarist Marie-Lou Debels and violinist Ruth Mareen met in 2016 at the LUCA School of Arts Campus Lemmens in Leuven, Belgium. From their first rehearsal together, they immediately felt a strong musical connection. At the moment they are both completing their masters degree at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague. With their infectious enthusiasm and shared passion for chamber music they want to give the gift of beauty and energy to the audience.

We need a performance space of at least 3 meters x 2 meters. In indoor places with maximum 40-50 people it is possible to play without amplification, depending on the acoustics of the venue. In bigger venues and outside we need amplification. We have our own mics and little amp which amplifies up to 40 watt. This is only sufficient for small venues and amplifies up to 10 meters around us. We also need 2 power sockets and a chair without arm rests.
We need a place to storage our baggage (jackets, backpack). It is also nice to have a room to warm-up one hour before the start of the event.
