About / Biography

Empress Serena Salome is a soulful saxophonist based in Knightdale, North Carolina, blending jazz finesse with R&B and soul. She performs solo for ceremonies, cocktail hours and dinners - smooth instrumental sets drawn from jazz standards, Motown and contemporary pop - and brings high-energy feature sets with a full PA and backing tracks for receptions and parties of up to 250 guests.

Duo and trio line-ups with guitar, keys, or bass and drums are available for a fuller band sound, and she will learn a specific song for a first dance on request. Her stages have included the Cat's Cradle, the Pour House and Shakori Hills. Every set list is built with you around your event.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best gig you've ever done and the best venue you've ever worked at?

The best gig that I ever performed was when I went on tour with a D.C. native all women’s band where we played for the U.S. troops overseas to boost their morale.

What's your favourite type of event?

A lively and excited, engaged audience that is interested in the music being played and the musicians playing the music.

What's your previous experience and how did you start gigging?

My previous experience consists of thirty years of playing with various musicians and embracing their musical cultures. My interest in the “Hoots the Owl” as the puppet saxophonist on Sesame Street started the excitement of wanting to play. My father played a major role in ushering me into the direction of learning music, and with the help of private teachers, music teachers, my peers, my interest, and The Creator, all helped shape my musical journey, and how I deliver the musical message.

Which artists have you been most influenced by, who is your favourite artist and what is the greatest song of all time?

There are so many that have influenced my approach. From the love of Earth, Wind, and Fire, to MeShell NDegeoCello, Motown artists, Jazz greats, Erykah Badu, D’Angelo, and Mint Condition; these artist provided a foundation for musical building blocks to have a home.

Performance Info

What are your typical setup and performance times?

We normally arrive 2 hours before the performance to set up. We normally perform 2 x 45 minutes or 2 x 60 minute sets. We’re happy to play a bit longer or shorter but we’ve found that these set times suit us and our audiences best."

Are you happy to perform outside?

We’re happy to play outside but we ask for shade, a flat level surface and a power supply close to the performance area."

Do the clients have a say in what you play or is it a set repertoire list only?

The client can always request a new set list

How do previous clients most commonly describe your performances?

Excellent, talented, engaging
