Review Centre: Jazz Bands

"Let’s face it. Music soothes, heals, excites, entertains and inspires. Legendary Jazz Drummer and Bandleader, Art Blakey even said “(it) washes away the dust of everyday life.” I’ll go with that. That very moment when any artist starts to sing or play, is critical. We all want to be entertained, not just played to. And one more observation, if they look like they’re having fun - I am too. The Jazz Kings performed to a sell-out audience at the Brisbane Jazz Club: they brought their musical goods right through the front door and into our hearts and souls. The key difference is in the delivery. It’s called engagement, the sparkle in their eyes as they share their love of Jazz with everyone in the room. The Jazz Kings' repertoire is wide, impressive and constantly updated. It includes a couple of original pieces, but you can’t quite tell as they are very cleverly cloaked with the fabric of that particular era. What makes their evening different is their cheerful unpredictability. Not every song has each person doing an instrumental. (Which often can be tedious.) Two tunes might even be performed one after another without a formal introduction. Look out for some gentle fun inclusion with the audience – that’s the chance to sing along. It’s an old-fashioned but proven concept that has you laughing – and wondering where the night went. All-in-all, a thoroughly entertaining night. I’d go again. And again!"

I believe Sam would be a great choice for any musical endeavors or projects anyone had in mind and could bring a wealth of experience as well as a fresh and original perspective to the creative mixing pot. "Friday 24th November 2023 - The Jazz Kings - Tweed Valley Jazz and Blues A superb gig to bring a fitting close to a year of top-flight music. ‘The Jazz Kings’ left us in no doubt why they are currently rated among the top outfits on the North Coast. Each of them – Nicole Parker-Brown on vocals, Peter Uppman on vocals and trumpet (sometimes almost at the same time), Gordon Matheson on guitar, Col Atkinson on bass and yet more vocals, and Jose McLaughlin on keyboards – is an accomplished performer in their own right, and in combination they are a musical powerhouse to be reckoned with. It was an evening of eclectic mix, from popular jazz standards, through blues arrangements that will be appearing on their latest album, to occasional dips into the classical realms, and a few nostalgic ‘pop’ reminiscences. Among the favourites were their own arrangements of evergreens such as ‘Night and Day,’ ‘All Of Me’, ‘Misty’, ‘Georgia On My Mind’ and ‘Making Whoopee’. Jose even gave a nod towards his earlier career as keyboard player and musical director of ‘Gerry and the Pacemakers’ with his updated arrangements of ‘Ferry Cross the Mersey’ and ‘Don’t Let the Sun Catch You Crying’. All in all, a great end to 2023, and the Club Committee took time at the end to wish all members and visitors a happy and safe Xmas and a prosperous New Year. If it promises music of the same quality as this past year, then we’ll have no complaints."

His music created such a beautiful and elegant atmosphere while our guests mingled, and it truly elevated that part of the evening. So many people came up to us to say how much they loved the music. "WOW! WOW! WOW! Bravo! This band was amazing! We hired them to perform at a venue in Geneva, Switzerland called 'Uptown Geneva' (a great venue I would recommend too!) Everyone at our event had a great time dancing and singing along. Mara's voice is astonishing and she is such a lovely person to talk with! 10/10 would hire again! Very easy to work with, very professional and accommodating. Their music catalogue is full of fun, popular songs everyone will know. "Where do I begin? In a nutshell, Mike Goudreau Trio put our event over the top. He communicated with me prior to the event to iron out the details, they arrived promptly to set up, and my guests are still commenting on how wonderful their music was! I used Gig Masters for the first time, and they delivered the best! Mike, you and your group made my parents anniversary party extra special.
