Review Centre: Jazz Singers

"Friday 24th November 2023 - The Jazz Kings - Tweed Valley Jazz and Blues A superb gig to bring a fitting close to a year of top-flight music. ‘The Jazz Kings’ left us in no doubt why they are currently rated among the top outfits on the North Coast. Each of them – Nicole Parker-Brown on vocals, Peter Uppman on vocals and trumpet (sometimes almost at the same time), Gordon Matheson on guitar, Col Atkinson on bass and yet more vocals, and Jose McLaughlin on keyboards – is an accomplished performer in their own right, and in combination they are a musical powerhouse to be reckoned with. It was an evening of eclectic mix, from popular jazz standards, through blues arrangements that will be appearing on their latest album, to occasional dips into the classical realms, and a few nostalgic ‘pop’ reminiscences. Among the favourites were their own arrangements of evergreens such as ‘Night and Day,’ ‘All Of Me’, ‘Misty’, ‘Georgia On My Mind’ and ‘Making Whoopee’. Jose even gave a nod towards his earlier career as keyboard player and musical director of ‘Gerry and the Pacemakers’ with his updated arrangements of ‘Ferry Cross the Mersey’ and ‘Don’t Let the Sun Catch You Crying’. All in all, a great end to 2023, and the Club Committee took time at the end to wish all members and visitors a happy and safe Xmas and a prosperous New Year. If it promises music of the same quality as this past year, then we’ll have no complaints."

"Nicola sang at my recent wedding and her extraordinary efforts truly make our day exceptionally memorable. When I initially requested her to perform at our reception, little did I know the lengths to which she would go to ensure it was a day to remember. Upon discovering that the ceremony was taking place at a Hospice so that my niece and Goddaughter, Pami, could participate, Nicola selflessly volunteered to sing there as well. For the ceremony, Nicola had to learn three entirely new songs, a task she eagerly undertook. Additionally, she not only sang but also arranged for the music for our first dance, which was far from the traditional wedding song. Nicola’s dedication and talent made our special day truly unique and unforgettable. Nicola’s charming personality make her a wonderful choice for wedding events. "Annelise was perfect in every way. Prompt, communicative and responsive. Everyone at the party loved her and commented on her style. This was important to us as we were catering for all ages and tastes. She sang beautifully. I would definitely recommend and book again. Just wonderful."

"Kate Stevens has a beautiful and mellifluous voice that was pitch perfect at the the wedding. Not only that Kate is a gorgeous person and looks stunning! Kate was very conscientious in the build up to the event and went out of her way to ensure that the day went smoothly ,a very professional performer. The singing was so good that both the bride and groom were reduced to tears... can't say better than that. I would recommend Kate Stevens to anyone and would be happy to be contacted for a reference."

"If experience leads to talent, then they have it in spades! John Stephens (skins), Geoff Miller (Double bass), the amazing Schmoe (Sax), and maestro Peter Merchant (Piano) provide the fabric upon which Samantha sings up a storm & works the crowd with diamond encrusted silk gloves delivering notes that wake the angels!! We will also be treated to a wonderful guest appearance by Jazmine (Samantha’s daughter) who is taking the SA jazz scene by storm. Jazz at its best folks!"
