Photo of Annelise - Jazz & Swing Singer Annelise - Jazz & Swing Singer "What a lovely voice and very talented performer, Annelise Molloy was well received by the audience and was a real success." Based in Letchworth Garden City, England (15 miles from Bedford) Patricia Hunter - Community Event - 09/06/19 Photo of Mickey Fordola Mickey Fordola "What a fantastic voice, Mickey's performance was outstanding! He entertained our audience of 650 plus members and guests, at our New Years Eve Ball, with effortless charm, from the ballads he began with, to the big band numbers he sang at the end. Many of our guests are still talking about him now! A classy and professional act I would highly recommend." Based in Cambridge, England (25 miles from Bedford) Mark Pawley - Hong Kong Football Club Photo of Harmony In Harlem Harmony In Harlem "Harmony In Harlem performed at our wedding at the Plaisterers' Hall on London Wall in 2012. We thought that the band was fantastic - our guests loved it and at least one said it was the best music they have ever heard at a function - I certainly thought so!" Based in Cambridge, England (25 miles from Bedford) Lord Collins of Mapesbury - Private Wedding Photo of Mellowtone Jazz Trio Mellowtone Jazz Trio "The Mellowtone Jazz Trio played for us at an evening reception for our son's Bar Mitzvah, and they were outstanding. We were aiming for a relaxed chilled out atmosphere in a marquee in our back garden, and their music provided the perfect backdrop. We had masses of compliments from family and friends, and we would not hesitate to recommend them. The process of inquiring and booking them was also simple and a pleasure. Thanks for a wonderful evening!" Based in St Albans, England (27 miles from Bedford) Jemma Levene Photo of Harmonica Lewinsky & The Highway Patrol Harmonica Lewinsky & The Highway Patrol "Last night I met up with some pals down at the very hospitable Mermaid Inn to check out the latest musical venture of the great Harmonica Lewinsky. We’ve always been highly entertained by his music hall/cockney act and indeed his 60s/70s cover material, but this was to be something of a completely different flavour – a country/ western swing experience! Launching into ‘Glendale Train’, Lewinsky and his band, The Highway Patrol, soon had the place rocking. The sound of finger pickin’ Dzal Martin’s Telecaster was the perfect accompaniment and upright bass player Ewan Penkey’s rhythm proved that no drummer was required. As well as rockers such as ‘Panama Red’, ‘Folsom Prison Blues’ and the brilliant tongue-twisting ‘Hot Rod Lincoln’, Lewinsky and the boys were also able to deliver truly 'hurtin' & heartbreaking' melancholy classics such as Warren Zevon’s ‘Carmelita’ and Kenny Rogers’ ‘Ruby’. Their touching version of Commander Cody’s ‘Seeds & Stems Blues’, featuring the wonderful pedal-steel guitar playing of John Davis, (who had been impeccable all evening) had me almost crying into my pretzels. Personality and humour has always been an important part of Harmonica Lewinsky’s act and, with his usual banter and rapport, he certainly didn’t let us down. We particularly enjoyed the tongue-in cheek ‘All My Exes Live in Texas’. Thanks for a great night, boys – we look forward to the next time." Based in Harrow on the Hill, England (39 miles from Bedford) Sterling Morfett - Punter at the Mermaid, St Albans Photo of Chris Weeks Chris Weeks "‘Everybody has commented on how well the party went and absolutely loved your singing - they all really praised you. I think you really made the night and you were so good with the kids I think they will talk about you for a long time.’" Based in Oxford, England (43 miles from Bedford) Graham Phillips

Frequently asked questions

The average price for swing bands on Gig Heaven is £550, with rates from £170 to £1,700+. Cost varies based on the number of musicians, set length and the style of swing. Swing bands range from intimate jazz combos to large orchestras, and the size of the ensemble is the primary factor in pricing.

The swing bands for hire perform swing, big band jazz, jive, boogie-woogie and related styles from the 1930s through to the modern swing revival. Many bands offer a mix of vintage classics and contemporary songs performed in a swing style.

Typical bookings for swing bands include vintage-themed weddings, black-tie dinners, corporate events, cocktail parties, swing dance nights and gala celebrations. Swing music creates a sophisticated, energetic atmosphere that is perfect for dancing.

The swing bands on Gig Heaven range from small combos of three to five musicians up to full big band line-ups with horn sections and vocalists. A smaller group suits intimate settings, while a larger ensemble delivers the classic big band swing sound.

Most swing bands are self-contained and bring their own instruments, PA system and amplification. Larger ensembles may have specific staging requirements. It is worth confirming technical and space needs with the band before booking.

Swing is written for dancing and most bands build the set around it, varying the tempo so the floor stays busy rather than holding one pace all night. Several will run a short demonstration early on at events where guests do not know the steps. A floor area clear of tables makes far more difference to this than the size of the line-up.

Most perform in vintage-styled suits or dresses in keeping with the era, and many will match a black-tie or 1940s theme if asked. Some carry more than one look and will confirm which suits the occasion. Mentioning the theme when enquiring is usually enough, as it rarely affects the fee.

Most line-ups include one, and in smaller groups the singer often doubles on an instrument. Some acts are instrumental only, which works well for background playing but changes the feel once people want to dance. Profiles say which format each act offers and several can supply either.
