About / Biography

Myself Mel Botes (J-MelBo) (Vocals, Lead Electric and Acoustig Guitars, Harmonica, Looper) and colleague Simon Orange (Vocals, Piano and keyboards) play a wide variety of genres, different styles and have a large catalogue and selction of songs. As a duo we play acoustic/electric classic pop and rock songs, ballads and blues from the 60's to the nineties. We have over 35 years of experience in the music industry. Venues inlude Theatres, Restaurants, Product launches, Industrial theatre, Private parties, Festivals, Wine estates, Corporate functions, Birthday Parties and other events. Shows and Scripted Theatre productions include: Pink Floyd - Crazy Diamond, The Dark side of The Moon and Greatest Hits. Dominoes - A combination of Pink Floyd, Dire Straits and Original songs. Dire Straits - Sultans of Swing, Flight of Bird, The River Symphony, Poets, Wine and Song, Guitar Heroes, Simon and Garfunkel - Old Friends, Eric Clapton - Me and Mr Clapton and many more.

What information do you require about a venue?

The capacity, stage size, backstage area, sound engineer, directions, accommodation (if specified travel etc), soundcheck times, meals, allowances etc.


Do you provide sound and lighting equipment?

Yes, if the venue does not exceed 100 people and a basic lighting rig at the client's expense.


Can you provide a Spotify/DJ service before and between your sets?

Yes, we’re happy to play music from Spotify before, after and between our sets. We’re happy to choose the music ourselves or let the client choose the music.


Are you able to provide a production document?

Yes, we can provide a production document with lighting cues, a script and technical information.

What's your previous experience and how did you start gigging?

I have 35 years' experience of playing in South - Africa, Mauritius, Mozambique, U.K. Ireland, Scotland, Holland, Switzerland, France, Austria, Germany and Italy. I started playing guitar in school and University playing gigs all over. I also played on the same line - up with Queen, Will Smith, I had the honor of meeting Brian May from Queen in London U.K. and performed for the Nelson Mandela show on the same stage as Will Smith, Queen, Katie Melua and more.


Which artists have you been most influenced by, who is your favourite artist and what is the greatest song of all time?

Pink Floyd, Dire Straits, Beethoven, Bach, Mozart, Vivaldi, JJ Cale, Syd Barrett, Jazz and Blues, Elvis, The Beatles, Ray Charles. Greatest song: While my Guitar gently weeps by George Harisson, Yesterday by Paul McCartney, some other of my favorite songs include High Hopes by David Gilmour and Dominoes by Syd Barrett.


What sort of atmosphere does your performance evoke?

We provide a very classy atmosphere.


How do you present yourself visually?

We dress elegantly, well groomed, friendly and professional. We love playing our instruments and it shows.

Performance Info

What are your typical setup and performance times?

"We normally arrive 2 hours before the performance to set up. We normally perform 3 x 45 minutes or 2 x 60-minute sets with 15 minutes breaks in between. We’re happy to play a bit longer or shorter but we’ve found that these set times suit us and our audiences best."


Are you happy to perform outside?

"We’re happy to play outside but we ask for shade, a flat level surface and a power supply close to the performance area."


Do the clients have a say in what you play or is it a set repertoire list only?

"We can learn specific songs before the event but we usually limit this to 5 songs. The clients are welcome to pick a set list from our repertoire or let us choose the music for them." Protection elements i.e. dust and rain.


How do previous clients most commonly describe your performances?

Exhilarating, passionate, on a different level. Depending on the gig and show we can adapt to the mood.


How many years of experience do you have of performing music at a professional level?

We are a professional duo with over 70 years of experience combined.


Are you able to play requests? Are you able to provide an acoustic and electric perfomance?

Yes, we can provide just acoustic music or electric music or a combination of both. And yes, as long as we have enough notification time we can prepare your specific song request.
