About / Biography

Clifton Joseph Warren (aka CJ) born in Cleveland, Ohio on April 30th, 1968 started his musical interest at the age of 8 with the help of his music teachers that gave him opportunities to sing, dance and act in leading roles of school plays. His mother gave him the privilege to study piano at the age of 12, started composition and self-taught in music history and theory.

Clifton composed his first Piano Sonata at 17, a serenade for string orchestra at 28, and other piano works between the ages 15-22. At 26, Clifton got his first break playing for the Jazz Ensemble at Mercer University in Macon, Ga directed by Dr. Douglas Hill in the years 1992-97.

During that time other professional musicians noticed his talents and gifts and hired him as their keyboardist in bands such as Danger Zone in 1995-1999, Voltage Brothers in 1999-2012. Traveling with the Voltage Brothers gave him opportunities to see celebrities and to open shows for artists like Morris Day & the Time, James Brown, Commodores, Gladys Knight, Boyz II Men, Kirk Franklin, Earth Wind & Fire, Alan Jackson, Travis Tritt, Clint Black, George Strait, Leann Rymes, and Martina McBride.

Today, Clifton plays like Liberace, swings like Ellington, improvises like Chick Corea, sings like Luther Vandross, transposes and arranges like David Foster, and mixes like Sting. Clifton is a composer in classical music with 350 piano compositions, 157 chamber, orchestra works and chorales, yet versatile in other genre by writing 12 country tunes, 37 jazz compositions, 87 Christian contemporary songs, 40 pop tunes, 10 heavy metal songs, 7 rap songs, and 15 big band originals. When the audience expects a variety of music, he has over 3,500 Cd's of all sorts of music, can learn a hard piece in less than 15 minutes, and a very long cover tune list of over 1,000 songs.

Technical Info

What are your basic technical requirements?

I need a performance space no less than 32 Sq ft., requires 2×13 amp power sockets, dry area at all times and 2 parking spaces.

What information do you require about a venue?

I need to know any directions that will help us find the venue and find the right place to load and unload my equipment.

Do you provide sound and lighting equipment?

Yes, I'm completely self contained. I bring my own PA system to all of my gigs as well as a simple lighting rig.

Can you provide a Spotify/DJ service before and between your sets?

Yes, I'm happy to play music from Spotify before, after and between my sets. I'm happy to choose the music myself or let the client choose the music.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best gig you've ever done and the best venue you've ever worked at?

When I was playing with the Voltage Brothers Band for 3 weeks at the Divi Casino Resort in the Virgin Islands!

What's your favourite type of event?

All family events to where the children and the adults are dancing and losing themselves in the music!

What's your previous experience and how did you start gigging?

My first gig started in Macon, GA playing the piano at the Cafe Le Ritz, and meeting professional performers like Otis Redding III, Harold E. Thomas of Danger Zone, and Nate Evans of the Temptations, to whom I've collaborated with all of them.

Which artists have you been most influenced by, who is your favourite artist and what is the greatest song of all time?

Stevie Wonder is my favorite artist of all time and I love singing his hits. I also love Michael Jackson, Michael McDonald, and Steely Dan's Donald Fagan.

Performance Info

What are your typical setup and performance times?

I normally arrive 2 hours before the performance to set up. I normally perform 2 x 45 minutes or 2 x 60 minute sets, but I don'tlike to take breaks. I'm happy to play a bit longer or shorter but I've found that these set times suit us and our audiences best

Are you happy to perform outside?

I'm happy to play outside but I ask for shade, a flat and dry level surface and a power supply close to the performance area.

Do the clients have a say in what you play or is it a set repertoire list only?

I can learn specific songs before the event but I usually limit this to 5 songs, andthe songs mustbe positive and appropriate. The clients are welcome to pick a set list from our repertoire or let us choose the music for them.

How do previous clients most commonly describe your performances?

Previous customers would describe me as a high energy guy that loves to get the audience on their feet dancing."

Will I try to keep up with today's music?

Only if the music is allowed to bring positive musical atmospheres!!
