Call me Winston - The Tarantino tribute
"The effectiveness of music in Quentin Tarantino's five films has much to do with the way he perceives music. Tarantino thinks that songs in general function as miniature films.
He views music as a way to extend the plots of his films. The soundtrack has the responsibility not only of setting the tone of the scene, but also of bringing clarity to emotions that are not fully expressed by the characters.
All of this works seamlessly because Tarantino hears the song first, then writes a scene around it. It is therefore not surprising that music has such a remarkable impact in his films.
How does music affect the way we perceive Tarantino's films? It is true that all music will make the viewer react emotionally, but what matters to Tarantino is that, most of the time, music produces what he perceives as the "appropriate" emotional impact on a scene. For example, if something other than "Stuck in the Middle With You" had been chosen to accompany the "ear cutting" scene in Reservoir Dogs, the audience might never have known about Mr Blonde's sadistic tendencies.
The key to Tarantino's success in avoiding music perceived as just "adequate" is that he writes all his film scripts with specific music in mind. By being determined in his selection, Tarantino ensures that the music of Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, Jackie Brown, Kill Bill Vol.1 and Kill Bill Vol. 2 plays an active role in the narrative structure of the film and, equally important, that it does something the audience will want to remember.
These are the memories that the members of Call me Winston wish to bring back to the viewer.
This "tribute band" orchestra newly created on the Côte d'Azur is unique in the South Region. With its 10 members, (singer, female singer, guitar, bass, drums, percussion, keyboards trumpet, alto saxophone, baritone saxophone), it will remind you of the best moments from Tarantino films through their soundtrack."
