About / Biography

Latin Waves Duo comprises Karen Arango and Sergio Amaro, two Colombian artists who came to Australia to share their music amid the multicultural environment that this country offers. Both are singer-songwriters; their guitars accompany the singing that evokes the Latin American sound mixed with other genres, such as pop, rock and jazz, which have influenced their musical careers. Their lyrics evoke landscapes and moments that take their listeners on a journey towards the depth of their being; their songs deal with themes with which we have all identified at some point, which allows us to feel in places we have visited and inhabited at some point in our lives, and with which we can connect even in places so far from where they were conceived.

Karen Arango is a classical guitarist, and Sergio Amaro is a choral director. Their professional training has allowed them to impregnate their music with academic rigour, always hand in hand with the naturalness with which the songs are born. Their paths met in experiences that led to the writing of new songs and their desire to share their music with the world.

Technical Info

What are your basic technical requirements?

We need a performance space of at least 4 meters x 4 meters. We require 2 x 13 amp power sockets and 1 parking spaces.

What information do you require about a venue?

We need to know any directions that will help us find the venue and find the right place to load in our equipment. We’d also need to be informed if there’s a sound limiter in the venue

Do you provide sound and lighting equipment?

Yes, we can provide our own amplification equipment. However, if the venue has high-tech equipment, we can adapt to it. We do not have basic lighting equipment

Can you provide a Spotify/DJ service before and between your sets?

Yes, we’re happy to play music from Spotify before, after and between our sets. We’re happy to choose the music ourselves or let the client choose the music

What is our line up?

We are two singers with an electric and folk guitar. We sometimes use minor percussion as shakers. We have original music and can include some covers. If it is needed to scale the show up we can include a percussionist and pianist. Both line ups have been used in previous performances

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best gig you've ever done and the best venue you've ever worked at?

Karen Arango, classical guitarist and singer-songwriter, holds master's degrees in Classical Guitar Performance and 20th-century Latin American Music. She has performed in Colombia, Spain, Venezuela, Ecuador, and Australia. Her music blends traditional Colombian and Latin American sounds with jazz and pop, positioning her within the World Music genre.

Sergio Amaro, choral conductor and singer-songwriter, holds degrees in Choral Conducting, Artistic Education, and Latin American Cultural Studies. With a background in popular music, and choral music across Latin America and Spain, he began his solo career in 2020, writing songs that explore identity, connection, and change in contemporary Latin America.

What's your favourite type of event?

We enjoy performing at all kinds of events, but indoor concerts are our favorite. Guests leave inspired by our vibrant voices after recitals rich in nuances and narrative connections

What's your previous experience and how did you start gigging?

We began performing live individually—Karen within academic and music traditional festivals and Sergio in popular music groups for large audiences and choral multicultural festivals. Together, we started playing in Bucaramanga, Colombia, at festivals for diverse audiences and later in Brisbane at venues like The Bug, City Sounds, and Samford Live

Which artists have you been most influenced by, who is your favourite artist and what is the greatest song of all time?

We have followed the process of different musical duos, as well as listened to mainstream music. We enjoy singing Colombian, Brazilian, and Mexican music and all kinds of new Latin American authors that combine pop, jazz, and Latin American rhythms, among others. Jorge Drexler, Alex Cuba, Natalia Laforcade, Sin Banderas, Alex Ferreira, Conociendo Rusia, and also traditional singers like Ibrahim Ferrer.

Performance Info

What are your typical setup and performance times?

We usually arrive an hour before the show to set up the stage and do sound check. We usually do two 45-minute sets or two 60-minute sets. We are willing to play a little longer or shorter, but we have found that these times work best for us and our audience.

Are you happy to perform outside?

We'd be happy to play outside, but we ask for shade, a flat, level surface, and a power source close to the performance area, and for the environment to be as noise-free as possible, or for people to at least be able to hear the music we're making

Do the clients have a say in what you play or is it a set repertoire list only?

We can prepare specific songs before the event, but we limit ourselves to just a few. We can share the song list with clients beforehand to let them choose some of their preferences.

How do previous clients most commonly describe your performances?

Our previous clients describe us as a group that inspires connection and good vibes, and they recognise the work done by professional people in music who respect it and try to share it naturally
