Review Centre: Medieval / Historic Ensembles

"I'm not sure if there are many events that receive such detailed planning attention as do weddings. When my son and future daughter in law asked me if I could find a classical guitarist for their mid-summer outdoor wedding, I was thrilled to be assigned a specific role and to help. Stephan Kane came to us with strong recommendation. He exceeded our expectations from the first moment. At the bride's special request, Stephan was asked to play "La Valse d'Amelie" for the processional. I had heard the piece previously arranged for piano and for orchestra but never for guitar. Stephan created an arrangement for guitar especially for the event. Given that the event was outdoors and the procession stretched a goodly distance, timing the processional was part of the challenge. Stephan did that beautifully. Additionally, he provided lovely selections of his choosing as the guests assembled, appropriate amplification equipment, and executed both set up and break down of his equipment expeditiously and discretely. Stephan was politely responsive to my emails, communicated well and completely, and did for us everything that was expected and more. To me and to many, live music enhances any event. Working with a wonderful musician like Stephan, who is, as well as talented, gracious and humble, makes adding the magic of live music to the ambiance an easy decision. Val J."

"We are so glad that we booked Peter to perform at our wedding drinks reception. He played music from a range of eras, and it was ideal for our festive winter wedding in a Medieval venue. We knew he’d be perfect as soon as we listened to some of his sample tracks online, and in person he was even better. Peter provided a great atmosphere, he was friendly and got on well with the guests. Peter phoned a couple of weeks before the event to discuss our preferences for musical eras and instruments. We asked for a range of things (including a few Christmas carols), with slightly more hurdy gurdy, as it’s our favourite period instrument. Our guests loved Peter’s performance, as did we, and we 100% recommend him for events. We’ve had lots of comments afterwards from people saying how great he was. Thank you, Peter, for helping to make our day so memorable and festive"

"“Musical Wizard:” Against the backdrop of the oak-panelled Great Hall, and under the hooded gaze of Lord Preston’s impressive portrait, Peter Bull, resplendent in black velvet and sporting a large ostrich-feather hat, took us through a tour of the music and instruments of the Civil War. The Hall itself was used as lodgings for the Roundheads and one could imagine the music echoing down the centuries to a very different audience. Peter Bull performed two different concerts, beginning with a selection of tunes by John Playford (1651), played with great dexterity on the hurdy-gurdy (or wheel fiddle), a cross between a violin and the bagpipes! In contrast, he then performed the popular Drink to Me Only With Thine Eyes (Ben Johnson) and Gather Ye Rosebuds (William Lawes) on the lute. "

"When we were looking for a musician to play at our wedding ceremony and cocktail hour, we really wanted to have someone who not only had an amazing sound, but who would be willing to personalize our song selection. We can't say enough about Stephan, he is an extremely talented classical guitarist, very professional and he really went above and beyond! He learned 10 songs for us that were not in his repertoire and he did such a fantastic job of every single song he played! We received so many complements from our friends and family and highly recommend him. "Stephan played at our wedding recently and was a wonderful vendor: professional, friendly, and the music itself was lovely. He was very flexible about the un-forecasted rain at our outdoor ceremony too! In searching for vendors I ran into a few homophobic musicians/other vendors, but Stephan wasn't fazed by a LGBT wedding at all. I highly recommend Stephan for any wedding!"

"Stephan was great! We had a smallish ceremony in an ocean cove and the mix of classical and contemporary music set the mood both pre-ceremony and during. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend him to other couples looking for an acoustic guitarist on Oahu."

"Talented and A Breeze To Work With Stephan is clearly talented, it goes without saying, but he is also willing and able to learn new music outside of his repertoire, for a very reasonable price. The music in our ceremony was intentionally chosen, and he respected and honored our vision with such grace and class. We are so grateful to have found him and couldn't recommend him enough."

"Once again the Manor House was packed to capacity for what turned out to be a good humoured and very instructive concert. Dressed in period costume with a dashing feather in his cap, Peter Bull treated his audience to a range of airs and ballads from the time of King Charles I. His quiet and unprepossessing manner immediately endeared him to all present and he soon had feet tapping to the brisk rhythm of the hurdy-gurdy. A carefully constructed introduction to each instrument — the aforementioned hurdy-gurdy, the flute, dulcimer and lute, and the type of tune about to be played or sung, added to the enjoyment of the evening. Although lacking the nuances of later music with its elaborate crescendos and embellishments, Peter Bull gave his audience an insight into the vigour and love of words and music enjoyed during the period of the English Civil War and the early renaissance."

"Stephan brought an incredible atmosphere to our event. Along with a violinist, their sound was gorgeous and filled the room. They performed a great set of contemporary songs through cocktails – and even learned a requested piece for our ceremony. Absolutely beautiful.
